Mary was born c1829 in Glasgow Scotland.
She married James McKinlay a coal miner on 6 February 1855 at Blythwood she was age 26 years. Mary was James' third wife and they had 9 children.
In 1861 James, aged 44, is living at Faimegare Colliery, where he is a colliery Fireman. His wife is Mary McConell, aged 35. Children are James (12) son from second marriage, Mary (5), Edward (4), Robert (2) and David (2mths).
James was later to become a Colliery Manager. He died in August 1871 and she was a widower with 6 surviving children. In 1874 Mary McKinlay occupation Cook and her children departed Glasgow for New Zealand on board the ship 'Soukar'.
In New Zealand, Mary lived with her married daughter Mary and Henry Paton at their residence in Dunedin.
Mary McKinlay died age 78 years on 5th May 1907 at the Paton residence, Maitland Street Dunedin.
She was buried 9th May 1907 in Southern Cemetery Dunedin - plot 11P 71.
