Welcome to Technology Basics

Welcome to what I’m calling “Technology Basics”. In this class we will explore the ever expanding world of technology. This is an inquiry-based class, that means the things we learn together should create individual questions for you. As you research the answers and learn more, it should create more questions. This is how learning naturally works. Think of it as a learning journey. Like any journey, you will only go as far as you’re willing to take yourself.

  • Unit 3 Week 7
    Monday (5/7)
Today we will grade out Unit 3 Learning Journal. Students need to use this time to work on their Genius Hour. Genius Hour Presentations will be due May 17th. That's in 10 days. Be prepared to go present first. Remember, we are looking or deep knowledge about your topic. This requires extensive research. Use different search terms, use search operators like site:edu or filetype:pdf, and SPEND TIME READING. The best resources with deep information are usually in the form of text. Don't forget to take notes and save your sources.

    GENIUS HOUR TIPS
-Know your stuff! You will mainly be graded on how knowledgeable you are on your topic.
-Definitely know the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, and WHY (basic/common knowledge)
-Be able to evaluate everything you have learned, explain themes, critical moments, little known details, etc. (deep knowledge)
-Images rule. Show us what you are talking about--use multiple different images of the same thing rather than talking too long on one slide.
-Don't put too much information on one slide. Stretch it out to several slides, which also allows you to show more cool images.
-Use cool, high resolution images to tell your story.
-DO NOT READ TO THE AUDIENCE from the screen. Slides shouldn't have more than a sentence of text--short bulleted lists are better.
-Use slide headings as you talk about different parts of your topic to help keep the audience on track.
-Limit the video. You can use video if its absolutely necessary, but try to keep it at no more than a minute.
-Be enthusiastic! Use what you know about PVLEGS speaking skills, but be excited about your topic! If you're not excited, your audience won't be.
    -
DO NOT READ TO THE AUDIENCE from the screen. Did I mention that?

    GENIUS HOUR RUBRIC
    Genius Hour Presentation Rubric

    Tuesday (5/8)
Today, we will begin Unit 4 - Digital Art. We will start by watching a short video from Pixar about all the jobs and skills that work together to make animated movies. We will also skip through this time-lapse of a landscape drawing for a video game. Mr. Vail will demonstrate a few digital art tools such as PixlrBeFunky, PowerPoint, and Preview, Sketch Up and another 3D design website called Tinkercad.

Then we will watch an introduction to digital art and this application of digital art too. Mr. Vail will then demonstrate Google's Made w/Code platformEzGiF (my lame example), ThisSand, and sculpting online. Using one or more of these apps/websites, students need to create some digital art and put it on their home page of their Learning Journal website.

    Unit 4 Writing Prompts
    • -Insert an image or screenshot of the digital art you made. Describe in words the digital art you made. Describe the program or programs you used and the steps you took.
    • -Describe what you learned in class during this unit.
    • -Typing Report--make at least 3 attempts this unit and include a screenshot of your 3 best scores.
    • -Genius Hour Report--What new information did you learn this unit about your Genius Hour topic? What is one part of your Genius Hour topic that still confuses you or a part you need to learn more about?
