The Gulf Explorer carried passengers between Auckland and Great Barrier Island in the summer of 1983-4, possibly other summers before and after, but nevertheless, it was for a brief period.
The ship anchored or hove-to away from the wharf at Fitzroy and passengers were transported between the ship and wharf in the ship's lifeboat.
