Welcome to Grade Five!

Dear Parents and Students,

We have completed two weeks of school! We are off to a terrific start. As you know, planners have come home and homework has begun. Please initial your son or daughter's planner indicating you have seen their homework and it has been completed. If for any reason homework was not completed, please do not initial the planner. If you should have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Science and Social Studies have begun and some exciting new learning is taking place! In social studies, we learning all about Native Americans and will visit the Damariscotta River Association for some hands on learning on October 11th. This will be an entire day field trip outside. There will be more details to come as the date gets closer. In science, we have begun our Earth Systems unit and students have been excited to learn about the contents of the Earth, the difference between its rotation and revolution, and how all of these affect us as people living on the Earth.

Students completed their first writing prompt to begin our unit in Informational Writing. It has been interesting to read their writing and get to know them a little better. We will begin our unit by learning to construct correctly formatted and detailed paragraphs using transition words and clear communication to explain how to do something. This will present as a challenging, but fun experience!

In math we are studying place value through the millions and thousandths. Students have done very well so far and I am impressed with their math knowledge. We continue to complete daily timed test in addition. Lastly, ALL STUDENTS are required to complete 10 ALEKS TOPICS each week. This is also included as a grade in Power School.

Thank you for your support!
