At Anamosa Middle School all visitors must check in at the Main Office. It is district practice; students who do not feel well must go to the nurse’s office. Once at the Nurse’s Office, an assessment is documented and parents are called, if necessary. The Nurse or Health Secretary from your child’s building must contact the parent/guardian before a student can leave the building.

Just a reminder to everyone, please DO NOT send your child to school when he or she is sick.  If your child has had a temperature greater than or equal to 100oF, and/or has had vomiting or diarrhea, he or she should stay home from school.  Students will be sent home if these symptoms are present at school.

Children should stay home until they have been free from fever, vomiting and/or diarrhea for 24 hours.  They should be free from fever WITHOUT the use of any fever-reducer, such as Tylenol, Advil, Motrin or generic forms of acetaminophen or ibuprofen.  They should have kept food down without vomiting for 24 hours before they return to school. 

When your child has been home sick, the decision about whether or not to come to school can best be made the night before.  If your child has run a fever or had vomiting or diarrhea during that day, then they should plan on staying home the next day as well.  This will give you, the parent/guardian, time to arrange for their care without the last minute rush in the morning.  This also gives your child a day to rest, build up their strength, and complete any make-up work that has been sent home AND to make sure that they are really over their illness. 

If we, the school community, all follow these guidelines, there will be fewer sick children in school and, as a result, minimal exposure of healthy children to illness.  Proper and frequent hand washing will also help to decrease exposure.  Plenty of sleep (10-12 hours for children), healthy eating habits, and drinking adequate water all help to improve your child’s resistance to illness as well.
