for the continued support from our community.

AYS Named Scholarships

AYS offers several named scholarships which have been funded through large donations or memorials.

AYS welcomes contributions to any of these scholarship funds in order that we may continue to memorialize those that dedicated their lives to music education.

Jack Brummer Scholarship

One of the Alton Youth Symphony's most dedicated benefactors was Jack Brummer who lived in Alton. Jack chose to fund an endowment for the symphony upon his death because he believed in providing opportunities for children. Jack chose the symphony because he loved music, and he admired the dedication of his friends Ken Conrady and Teri Ortman. Each year a private lesson scholarship is awarded to a student based on auditions.

Suzanne Rodgers Scholarship

This scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Suzanne E. Rodgers. Suzanne was an educator in the Jersey Community School District for 27 years before her untimely passing in the spring of 2015. Suzanne was an ardent supporter of music in the Alton community, serving on the AYS Board when her sons Adam and Nicholas were AYS members. She also served on the board of ABOB (Alton Band and Orchestra Builders). In recognition of Suzanne's dedication to education and music, AYS has named a scholarship in her honor.

Leroy Fritz Scholarship

This scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Leroy Fritz. Leroy, a prominent musician in the Alton area and former board member of the Alton Youth Symphony, passed away on April 18, 2012. Mr. Fritz was the Director of Music for many years in the Alton School District and was responsible for starting the string program in Alton. He was a fine violinist and played with the Alton Symphony for years. When AYS was being formed in 1969, he was very helpful to Ken Conrady and Larry Crabbs in forming the structure of the Alton Youth Symphony. He will be fondly remembered as an enthusiastic supporter of music in our community.

Snow Scholarship

This is a full tuition scholarship to the prestigious Illinois Summer Youth Music camp on the campus of the University of Illinois, Urbana. The scholarship is in honor of the late Jim & Peggy Snow, the proud grandparents of two AYS alumni. They loved watching the Bloomfield (New Jersey) High School Marching Band practice and perform in the stadium behind their home. The criteria for this scholarship is that the applicant be a graduating (8th grade) AYS student, who is a wind or percussion player, that will participate in the Alton Marching 100 in the 9th grade. The student needs to have a letter of recommendation from their middle school music teacher and be in good standing with AYS. Click HERE for more information about ISYM.

Michael J. Trout Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2006 by Pauline Trout in memory of her late husband, Michael J. Trout. Michael was devoted to the artistic and musical education of his loving daughter, Rachel, an AYS alum. He was active in working with children; always volunteering for school events and being an active participant in Rachel's early Suzuki violin studies. This scholarship for private lessons is awarded to a student based upon auditions.

Bev Carter Scholarship

Bev Carter in an AYS Board member who is active in several other fine arts organization in our community. Her generosity enables AYS to provide a scholarship for students based on an audition.

Deborah Fox Scholarship

This scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Deborah Fox. Deborah was a sectional coach for AYS for many years until her passing in March of 2011. She was a respected musician and a private flute instructor, and an active member and former president of the Alton Symphony Orchestra.
