·       Reading Homework:  Instructions for Reading Response Journals:

Please write 1/2 page after your reading each night.  Write a short summary and then share your opinion about your reading.  If it takes you usually 5 minutes to write ½ a page then read for 25 minutes.  If it takes you 10 minutes to write ½ a page then read for 20 minutes.  So the whole Reading Response Journal will take 30 minutes total.  I expect you to read 5 out of 7 days a week.  Reading Response Journals will be on due Friday.

Please follow the format below when making a new entry in your journal:

·       Math:   We use the Utah State Common Core Curriculum to guide our instruction.  We will be using the Envisions math book as our base textbook this year.  Each day students will have a daily math lesson and an assignment they work on in class.  Students also receive a practice page that is homework.  The practice page is always related to the daily math lesson and shouldn't take more than 15 - 20 minutes to complete at home.  The following day we will correct it, answer questions, and clarify misconceptions as a class.

At home students can visit the math website:

·       Vocabulary/Spelling We will have Vocabulary Tests about every week.  Students will be given eight vocabulary words with their definitions on Monday during small group. They will write the vocabulary words and definitions in their planner.   They will need to be able to both spell  and define the word.   The vocabulary words will be found in the different texts we will read in the Wonders Reading Program so knowing the vocabulary words will assist in their comprehension of what they are reading.

·       Writing Workshop:  Most of our writing lessons and assignments will be done in class.  We will be using the My Access online writing program to help improve our skill using the six traits of good writing.  Students will be encouraged to revise and edit their writing to show that they have mastered the 6th grade writing standards.

·       Science:    We will be using the following PDF as our main textbook: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-k2CUQwDmJQSGNDQnpqZEthMHc/view

Students will do some experiments in class. Students will receive a worksheet or a research report. Some students will be able to finish their homework in class, they won’t always have science homework.

·       Homework Folder and Planners:  Your student will take home their homework folder and planner each day and will need to come to school with their homework folder and planner each day.  Students will write in their planner each day and I encourage them to use it to stay organized with their school work.  Parents are encouraged to check their student’s learning folder to see how their child is doing to master the different learning standards.

·       Attendance: One of the most important parts of a good education is good school attendance. Studies show that those who are at school on time, every day are more successful in higher education and in the workplace. Please help your child form Please help your child form good attendance habits now.

In order to maintain a safe and secure school, doors are locked once the tardy bell rings at 8:00 AM.

Track 2 - Please have your students in line by 9:10 each day. Teachers come and pick up their class before 9:15 each day so that students can be in school ready to learn by 9:15 AM. In order to maintain a safe and secure school, doors are locked once the tardy bell rings at 9:15 AM.

·       Birthdays

Your child can bring a treat to share with the class on their birthday and we will let them share it at the best possible time that day.  If your child has a summer birthday in June or July, we will celebrate them in May.  Remember treats need to be store bought rather than homemade.
