Laptop Requirement

In order to better prepare pre-service teachers for the professional communities they will enter, the School of Education supports and encourages teaching and learning with laptop computers.

All declared education majors and students who have begun taking 200-level education classes are strongly encouraged to own or have full time access to a laptop computer that meets current standards for productivity and internet access.

All candidates for elementary and secondary licensure are required to own or to have full time access to a laptop computer as delineated below:

  1. Elementary baccalaureate students are required to own or have full time access to a laptop for ED 410, 329, and 486 and for the internship year.
  2. Elementary post-baccalaureate students are required to own or have full time access to a laptop before they begin their summer courses.
  3. All secondary post-baccalaureate licensure candidates are required to own or have full time access to a laptop computer by the beginning of their fall semester internships.

The School of Education strongly recommends Apple Macintosh laptops. However, we do not require Macs. Any laptop capable of running a modern operating system and which has sufficient RAM, hard drive space, and CPU speed to create movies and work with images will serve the purpose.

Please note that we do not recommend or support Netbooks of any variety. Current netbooks are slow, have very limited screen space, and are not capable of dealing with the demands of creating and working with multimedia.

If you have questions about how a laptop purchase will fit in with your current financial aid package, please contact the UAF Financial Aid Office.
