Welcome to the Department of Elementary Teacher Education! Our School of Education provides several routes for people who are interested in pursuing a career as an elementary teacher. We have a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education for undergraduate students, a one year Post-Baccalaureate Program for people who already have a degree, and two Elementary Education minors. We also serve as the administrative home for the Bachelor of Arts and Sciences degree. If you are interested in any of these areas, please review the elementary education options included in this website.

About the Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education

This degree and elementary teacher certification program is available for students on the Fairbanks campus and for students in the UAF rural campus service areas by distance delivery.  The degree requirements are designed to prepare students to meet national and state standard for quality teachers, and to meet standards that recognize, respect and build upon the unique cultural, linguistic and geographic factors specific to Alaska context.

The Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education (BAE) is an interdisciplinary degree.  Students take courses in content areas that prepares them for successful teaching at an elementary level.  The BAE prepares them for successful teaching at an elementary level.  The BAE provides numerous opportunities for students to connect theory and practice in a variety of real classroom, school and community contexts.

Students completing this degree benefit from collaborative efforts among several academic units within the University of Alaska Fairbanks and from School of Education partnerships with a wide range of Alaska's rural and urban schools and districts.  The program addresses both national and state standards, including National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) standards, Alaska Teacher Standards, Alaska Student Content Standards and Alaska Standards for Culturally Responsive Schools.

About the Post-Baccalaureate Program

The Elementary Licensure Program is a post baccalaureate, yearlong elementary licensure program for students who have previously completed a BA or BS degree.  The program meets the standards of two national associations (the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education/NCATE and the Association for Childhood Education International/ACEI), and all program completers must demonstrate the ability to meet the UAF/Alaska Teacher Standards. Coursework and internship requirements are tightly integrated and are guided by a recognition and respect for the unique cultural, linguistic and geographic factors that are specific to the Alaska context.  This is a classroom-based program that is built upon a close working partnership among interns, mentor teachers and university faculty.  Students complete course and fieldwork requirements while serving as interns in an Alaska school, and they are able to apply some of these program credits to the requirements necessary for a M.Ed. at UAF.
