e-Live Meeting on Saturday

Based on general student consensus, I'm scheduling our next e-Live meeting for 11am on Saturday, March 10. If you can't make the meeting on Saturday and would like to check in with me via a short phone call, please let me know! As a reminder, you'll be able to access the link to the e-Live meeting through Blackboard.

I'm a little behind in posting your grades and feedback in Blackboard, but hope to catch up in the next day or so. Please continue to provide feedback for your colleagues—that interaction among yourselves is a particularly valuable component of the course!

Instructions for eLive Meeting

February 9, 2012

To access eLive for our meeting, first log in to Blackboard. The last link in the blue navigation bar on the left is titled eLive

The session where we will meet is titled Spring 12 (CRN 40747) Online Pedagogy - First Meeting. The session is scheduled for 9am on Friday, February 10. 

If you've never used eLive before, please view this QuickStart Guide.

Please use a headset with microphone if possible. Join the session early (it will be available beginning at 8am) and run the audio setup wizard to be sure everything is functioning properly. Contact me by e-mail if you run into any problems!

Enabling Your Site for Comments — 2 Choices

Since I haven't found an elegant workaround, you have two possible ways to set up your site so that classmates can comment:
  1. You may give all of your classmates editing privileges on your Google Site (as I believe Dan has done)
  2. You may create a blog (on Blogger or WordPress) and link to it from your Google Site. You should definitely be able to enable comments on the blog.
I'm really sorry for this hiccup in the process; I thought I'd tested everything before the beginning of the semester. You're blazing the trail in this course, so that it can be improved for future semesters! If you have any problems or questions with setting this up, please contact me! We can work through it together!

In order to participate with others in the class, you'll want to enable comments on your weekly writing and other assignment pages. (You must do this on each page where you want to receive comments.) While viewing the page on your Google Site, click on the More button in the upper right hand corner. In the drop-down menu, click on Page Settings. In the dialog box that appears, you'll see a checkbox for allowing comments. Contact me if you have any questions!

Meeting on eLive Next Week

We will have three synchronous (at the same time) meetings during the semester—the first one is scheduled to take place next week. It should last about 1 hour. We will use eLive as the technology for the meeting. I'll post more details about how to access it soon, but for now we need to decide WHEN to meet.

Everyone on the roster has officially checked in—welcome to class! Your Google Sites are all listed on the Cohort page. If you haven't yet captured everyone's Twitter and Diigo identities, you may want to re-visit the discussion forum in Blackboard to collect those. I'm not planning further Blackboard discussions beyond the introductions; no need to keep checking there. At this point, we'll begin communicating via Google Sites and Twitter. I'm looking forward to a great semester! Let me know if you have any questions as we move into Unit 1.

Getting Started

On the navigation sidebar to the left you'll find links to course assignments and content. Familiarize yourself with the site as soon as possible:
  1. Read the syllabus. It provides information on required texts, grading policies, and other important course-related information. 
  2. Check the Blackboard link and verify that you can log in successfully.
  3. When you're ready to begin, click on Orientation. 
Your first assignments (located on the Orientation page) are due by January 27, 2012.
