The Short Story Writing Contest

Award Ceremony for Contest:

How to submit an entry:

Eligibility: Open to students living in Hungary, ages 12 to 19, who read and write in English. All entries must be entirely the original work of the entrant, in English, typewritten, and have not been published elsewhere or submitted in connection with any other contest. Written entries must be suitable for publication and must not contain any content or material which (i) infringes upon or otherwise violates the copyright, trademark, trade secret, or other intellectual property or proprietary rights of any person or entity, (ii) is defamatory or obscene or constitutes an invasion of privacy.

By submitting their work, entrants agree that all of their work is their original creation. Sponsors of this contest are not responsible for plagiarism in submissions. Any entry that judges suspect to be plagiarized will be disqualified.

Selection Process: All eligible entries will be read and judged by a selected group of volunteers.  The judging panel is comprised of parents and teachers from various international schools, United States Embassy workers, and selected university professors. There is no specific theme for a student’s short story.  To guide a student’s writing, he or she should use the ideas learned about structure, form and voice from the selection of American short stories that he or she has read.

Judging will be based upon the following:

1.    Content: unity, coherence, originality, detail.

2.   Form: mechanics, style, presentation.

Format: Typed, one-inch margins, nothing smaller than 12-point font, maximum five pages.

Prizes:

Winners from both Hungarian and International schools will:

·     receive a cash prize (1st $1OO, 2nd $75, and 3rd $50)

All participants have the opportunity to attend an awards ceremony held at The American International School of Budapest.

How to submit entry: Your entry will be assigned a number by the director of the contest or his representative. All entries must include a cover page with the writer’s name, age, address, phone number, and your email address.  Please remove your name from all other pages. You may only enter one story. Please remove your name from all other pages. Save a copy of your work: entries will be shredded after the contest, so no originals will be returned.
