The African Women in Mathematics Association (AWMA) was established in July 2013 in Cape Town, South Africa, to promote mathematics and African Women mathematicians. For this purpose, AWMA organize activities such as meetings, workshops, Conference, and Forum  to encourage interest in mathematics among women at all levels.

The 2016 AWMA/ West African Forum will be held in Mbour, Senegal, at AIMS-Senegal from 08 to 09 July.

This is the first regional activity of AWMA since its establishment and its main purpose is to bring together African Women mathematicians from the West Africa region to advance the Association’s Agenda of promoting mathematics and women mathematicians in West Africa.


The main objectives of this first regional Forum of AWMA is to bring together women from various countries of West Africa to a platform where they can present their scientific work, exchange their experiences and discuss initiatives that promote mathematics.

They will also be a plenary session from invited speakers representing various countries as well as experts from elsewhere to address and facilitate specific themes of the Forum.

The conference will focus on the following key issues relevant in women's empowerment and inter-
relations between them:

  • Presentation of SWMA and AWMA.
  • Promotion of gender equality in science, more precisely in mathematics.
  • Women and leadership.
  • Panel discussion on «Empowering women in science and technology: Inspiring young girls learners».
  • Posters presentations of some women in science's model.
  • Panel discussion on « Opportunities and Challenges for women in science »
  • Oral presentation on scientific research of the participants.


 The Forum is intended for West African mathematicians, Ph.D students, faculty members and all those who are interested in mathematics(Benin, Burkina Faso, Cap Vert, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinée Conakry,  Liberia,
Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Sénégal,...)

 All Participants will be accommodated in AIMS-Senegal Residences in Mbour. 
Transport from the Airport Dakar to the hotels will be arranged by AIMS as well.

Due to limited funds,
only some young researchers and PhD students will have their travel and
substance expenses covered by the organizing committee. All participants are encouraged to seek
funding for their transportation.
