LaTeX

This is the course page of a series of 7 lectures and 5 tutorials on the type setting system LaTeX. The lectures are given by Lucas Hackl (lucas.hackl@aims-senegal.org), tutor at AIMS Senegal.

Introduction to LaTeX

LaTeX is actually a document markup language and document preparation system for the TeX typesetting program. This means, we have the actual program TeX which translates TeX code into nice looking PDF files and we have LaTeX which generates the more complicated TeX code from more basic LaTeX commands. What you should take from that: You should think of LaTeX as a programming language for typesetting - you will script your own "layout".

Outlook: WHAT YOU WILL LEARN!

You will learn how to write scientific texts such as articles or lab reports. Furthermore, you will learn to produce professional layouts for your CV and personal statements which are very important for your applications. Finally, you will prepare scientific presentations using LaTeX beamer class.

Remarks on Language

I will teach in English, but I hope that you are volunteering to help your classmates who struggle with the English language. You can write in LaTeX in English or French. However, because English is the dominating language in the academic environment, for the two projects (CV and Beamer Class Presentation) are in English.

Remarks on Tutorials

There are 5 tutorials called "Problem Solving" which will give you the opportunity to apply what you have learned in the lecture. In fact, you will be do much more: You will discuss ideas and collaborate which enables you to go even beyond the content of the lecture. Be excited about the two projects which will be helpful for your later career because they will teach how to create a professionally looking CV (helpful for your applications) and how to prepare a scientific presentation on a mathematical topic using LaTeX Beamer Class (helpful for your scientific career).

Remarks on Tasks and Projects

There are 5 tutorials. 2 of them are two hours long (instead of just one hour) and in those two tutorials you will have to work on projects. In the other tutorials you will have short tasks. You will have to hand in the results of the tutorials at the end of the day. We will look at your work and use this knowledge to provide individual advice. We will give feedback, but the results won't count for your final grade. Therefore, don't be nervous! Just enjoy what you can do using LaTeX and look at it as a great opportunity to learn an important skill without stress.

I will give a short introduction to LaTeX guiding you to use Texmaker, but you are free to use another editor like Kile if you prefer it.

Lecture 2
I will introduce some examples of LaTeX for writing an experimental lab report or a scientific document (paper/essay/thesis).
Tutorial 2
Task: Create a document which has at least two pages with content you can choose. But you have to include a mathematical formula, a graphic and several paragraphs of text (in English or French). For example, you could describe your interests in mathematics giving some concrete examples. As graphics you can include a picture of yourself or something on the topic.
Bonus task: If you have more time and you are ambitious to learn more about LaTeX you can also search for a way to include a header and a footer.
Deadline: You will have to send your final document (latex file plus pdf) to lucas.hackl@aims-senegal.org before midnight of the day (24/08/2012).

Lecture 4
I will give examples for packages to create a professional CV like the moderncv package. Furthermore, I will make some comments on how to combine a professional CV with a statement of purpose and a covering letter for your applications.

Project 1: Create a professional Curriculum Vitae (CV) using a package like moderncv. Write everything in proper English.

Lecture 6
I will create an example presentation to give you an idea what you shall do for your project. You should listen carefully to enable you to finish the task to full satisfaction.

Project 2: Prepare a short presentation (2 minutes) with 2-4 slides (plus title page) on a basic mathematical definition, such as convergence, limit, invertibility, bijectivity, Cauchy sequence, norm of an operator. Some of you will be encouraged to give a presentation. Write everything in proper English.
Deadline: You will have to send your final document (latex file plus pdf) to assignments@aims-senegal.org before midnight of the day (30/08/2012).

Tutorial 5
Task: Create a nicely  looking professional template with  header and footer for all upcoming assignments. You can use the fancyhdr package to create a footer. Check out the handbook. And check out this.
