Attendance Policy

Attendance Policy

All children of school age starting at the age of six are required to attend school in the geographic area in which they reside. Permission to attend another school may be granted when a geographic exception is approved by the principal.

Optimum benefits of education can be achieved when students arrive to school on time and attend daily. Unexcused and/or excessive absences and/or tardies impact student learning due to loss of instructional time and are unacceptable. Schools are required to take appropriate measures to ensure regular school attendance for students who have excessive absences and/or tardies, Students with excessive absences and/or tardies will have additional supports which may include the following: parent-teacher conferences, home visits, social worker referral, Truancy Petition to Family Court for educational neglect, etc.

Absences will be excused if due to an illness, family court hearings, or medical reason with a verifiable note provided by the doctor for three or more consecutive dates. All other reasons will be considered unexcused unless cleared by administration. Vacations are unexcused absences and must be planned during non-instructional days and breaks.

The Department of Education Attendance Policy states that students must be physically present in school for at least half of the school day to be marked present. Any student who leaves school before or arrives after 11:00 a.m. will be marked absent. This policy applies to students who are excused early with an early release or if they are released due to illness from the health room.

Leaving School During the Day

Pupils are permitted to leave school during the school day upon request of the parents for emergencies. Medical and dental appointments should be scheduled after school hours whenever possible to prevent loss of valuable instructional time. Please send your child with a note to the office in the morning so arrangements can be made to have him/her meet you in the office at the appointed time. Parents must obtain the Off Campus Pass and sign out in the log before leaving campus.
