Welcome to Sandown Bay Academy

I’d like to extend a very warm welcome to the Sandown Bay Academy website. Here at Sandown Bay, we take pride in the exceptional care we provide for each and every student to achieve their very best. Our strong tradition of academic excellence and sporting success, coupled with a firm belief in the importance of good character and the development of confident, well-rounded students, ensures a richly rewarding experience and an excellent preparation for further education at university and beyond.

Our students have many varied interests, strengths and ambitions, and our mission, ‘To make our best better’, ensures that they aim high and achieve their goals. Our dedicated teachers and staff ensure that students have the very best support to succeed. Our pastoral system is second to none and provides each student with a Form Tutor who supports their progress and overall development.

Our School Council provides numerous leadership opportunities for students through the important role it plays in both the strategic and operational development of the Academy, while our House System provides fun, challenge and healthy competition.  There are many opportunities for parents and families to become involved in the wider life of the Academy; we pride ourselves on our warm and welcoming community.

Sandown Bay is a progressive Academy; we believe firmly in developing inquisitive, articulate learners who will cope with the challenges of the 21st century with confidence. We invest continually in our staff, curriculum and infrastructure to ensure that students leave us with the skills to compete in an increasingly competitive global economy.

Our campus is set amongst wonderful surroundings and we make the most of our environment and space to create opportunities for every student to thrive and experience success and happiness. I invite you to visit and take a tour with one of our student ambassadors to experience for yourself all that Sandown Bay Academy has to offer.

Principal's Blog

  • Principal's Blog - Friday 17th July It is now time for the summer break and I hope that all of the Academy staff and students have a wonderful time whether it be on the sunny Isle of Wight or elsewhere. It has been a great year for Sandown Bay. Previous blogs have relayed that the Academy has improved significantly and this has been confirmed at various points by Ofsted and others.  We have also maintained a sense of excitement and our students have had a range of opportunities that I have never seen on such scale. All of these are recorded in hundreds of photographs that have been published on this blog during the course of the year. As you will know, this is my final ...

  • Principal's Blog - Friday 10th July As we fast approach the end of term it is good to reflect on the successes this year; in October, following an Ofsted inspection the academy was removed from special measures.  Subsequent visits have confirmed that the school has continued to improve. I have been incredibly impressed with the commitment from students to embrace the huge range of opportunities on offer at Sandown Bay Academy. Student leadership, house activities, sports, trips, university visits; there is so much on offer for students every single week. From September there will be some significant changes to ensure that we continue to improve at a fast pace and that more students gain access to the care and support that we are proud to offer ...

  • Principal's Blog Friday 3rd July We have had another busy week in the glorious sunshine at Sandown. I was pleased to meet the Year 6 students again this week and to see that they are confident, happy and excited to start with us in September. Year 13 students enjoyed their end of term celebration last Friday evening, marking the end of their five years at Sandown Bay Academy. I wish them every success in the future, either at university or in employment. Please keep in touch and let us know how you are getting on.  Year 10 and 11 students studying Applied Learning have worked hard this year setting up an allotment. They have been growing courgettes, marrows, beetroot, cabbages, cauliflowers, lettuce, sweetcorn and lots ...
