Ian joined the Trust in 2012 as Group Secretary and General Counsel and became Group Chief Executive in October 2013. He started his career as a mathematics teacher and also taught in a school for children with special educational needs. He progressed to hold posts as a local authority director of education. As Chief Education Officer for the City of London, he was adviser to the Lord Mayor of London and City livery companies and led on setting up the City of London Academies in Southwark, Islington and Hackney. His involvement in the academy programme has included a role as chief operating officer for ARK and adviser to a number of other trusts. He has worked internationally as an adviser to the Saudi Arabian Government Investment Agency on the development of education infrastructure for new economic cities and Khazanah Nasional Berhad as programme director and adviser and on the development of trust schools in Malaysia. Ian is a barrister member of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple and a Chartered Fellow of the Institution of Personnel and Development.
