Common Core

Although Westminster Public Schools still measures academic growth based upon our own district Learning Targets (LT's); Colorado, along with 45 other states adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Toward this end, D50's LT's are either directly taken or largely comprised from the CCSS. The Common Core Mission Statement says:

"The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy."

This page provides teachers, administrators and parents resources to better understand the CCSS and how they impact the educational experience we provide our students.

Pedagogical Shifts demanded by the Common Core State Standards

There are twelve shifts that the Common Core requires of us if we are to be truly aligned with it in terms of curricular materials and classroom instruction. There are six shifts in Mathematics and six shifts in English Language Arts.
