Tuesday evening HMS hosted its first Literacy Carnival. It was a complete success thanks to numerous people. Special thanks goes to Sixth Grade teacher Mrs. Sherri Gleeson who was the creative brains behind creating such a fantastic evening. The carnival was set up with different locations that students and parents could go to and participate in various activities. There was fun for all. A special thanks also goes out to Miss Ashley Bering from Bow Wow Grooming and Rescue for her animals.
(Thanks goes out to Mrs. Molly Breckinridge for providing most of the pictures)
The sixth grade classes are in competition with each other playing "Minute to Win It" the next two weeks during Success period. Each classroom has formed two or three teams. The teams are in competition in the classroom answering math and english questions. (Questions are based on current sixth grade weaknesses which have shown a pattern to be weak on the 7th grade Acuity A test) The team that gets the most correct answers gets to compete in a "Minute to Win It" game that is changed every day and if time permits the losing team members get to compete in the games. At the end of each daily success period the classroom totals the number of students who complete the game accurately in one minute. At the end of 8 days, CLASSROOM scores are compared and an overall CLASSROOM winner is selected for a doughnut party and/or hang outside etc. the last day of school. Good Luck to all Sixth Graders!!!!!
Mr. David Ellis, 6th Grade teacher, shows how he was able to stack three golf balls!! This game is called "Caddy Stack" and to complete the game, three golf balls must be stacked one atop the other freestanding within the 60-second time limit and must remain freestanding for three consecutive seconds.

There is an opportunity for students to learn more about the college enrollment process on Saturday, June 14th. This opportunity is being hosted at East Side Church of God and Anderson University. This is an easy access opportunity for those who live in the Tenth Street and East Side district.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Glenda Ritz, came to HMS last week to observe Mrs. Milissa Crum's class. This year, Mrs. Crum was the only teacher in the nation using iLit for 6th grade. (iLit is a Language Arts/Reading program that uses ipads) There were only 52 kids that were a part of the pilot program. Glenda Ritz accepted an invitation to observe the iLit program in use. Next year iLit will be used in sections of the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Language Arts classes.
