Welcome to the English Language Learner Class! Students in this program are focused in improving their English language skills, like speaking, listening, reading comprehension, and academic writing. We have a supportive classroom in which all students are encouraged to try speaking in front of other English Language Learners. Also, the students will have goals each month. These will focus on specific genres of reading and styles of writing.
-September is the month to learn the irregular verbs. These verbs change spelling depending upon the time of the verb (tense). Many EL students benefit from this review even if they have lived in the U.S. for 2-3 years.
-Also, we will begin to learn Tier 2 vocabulary. Tier 2 vocabulary consists of academic words that they hear or read every day in content classes. Tier 2 vocabulary is the language of school, of writing well, and of comprehending the daily classroom material.
- In September, grades 7 and 8 will read a narrative nonfiction book or story that they can comprehend. We will discuss the books and stories, write about them, and give a small report in front of the class when we are finished.
We use a book for learning to write sentences, paragraphs, and essay. At the beginning of the school year, we will focus on parts of speech, sentence structure, and then continue into paragraphs.
-Grades 7 and 8 will speak in front of their classmates periodically and learn to have academic discussions.
I look forward to a wonderful school year! I love teaching students from all countries of the world and I love to travel and meet new people. Please feel free to contact me.
