EQ Allies of Houston and Beyond
Tuesday, March 8, 2011
2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Attendees: Janet Pozmantier, Gary Eagleton, Deborah Havert, Sarah Goldman, Judy Kajander, Heather Constantine
1) Welcome: Where can all members find our link on www.eq.org?
*Debbie shared about the link on www.eq.org which is all about EQ Allies of Houston and Beyond. She welcomed people to send along their biographical information to her at Deborah@6seconds.org and she will place their info in the People section of the link.
*It was mentioned that it might be a good idea to set aside some time during a meeting for each member to share what they do in their work, just as an orientation for all involved.
*It was mentioned that we could all share resources/documents with each other as it relates to research/ specific pieces that inform our work together. Debbie will send along the “Case for Schools” which is about EQ in Education.
*As part of housekeeping, Debbie will be sending out a Doodle survey to survey people about times for next (and all) meetings so that we have best times for most people. Also, we talked about the opportunity that some people may “call in” to the meeting at some times, when they cannot make the meeting.
2) Introduction: What is 1 reason I am committed to increasing EQ?
*It is the most important intelligence. We may want to “step into the shoes of our enemy” for better understanding. What do we perceive?
*EQ/SEL is overlooked. The Love U2 program has been working well for many people involved.
*The more I know…the more I can model for others. It could bring about world peace. We need to learn how to manage our feeling and thinking.
*All of my actions, thoughts, and feelings come from an emotional place.
EQ is Foundational!
*Noticing the abuse/violence---breaking that cycle.
*EQ is the Pathway to Positive Change.
3) Brainstorm: If we could do whatever we wanted to infuse EQ into the fabric of the Houston community -- how would we?
*Making a promise to model about positivity…how you handle adversity. Brene Brown is a change agent who talks about this.
*Talking to benefactors who believe in this work and want to be involved
*Enlisting the help of the Judge and the Mayor who seem to understand this work. The Judge and his wife have been involved with ADL and supported it.
*We could enable more people to realize that this work is kid-friendly and not unattainable.
*Creating a Houston-wide festival
*People respond to data, so we could have a pilot at a school (one that has violence issues, challenges) and infuse EQ Programs
*Starting an EQ Camp
*Enlisting students’ involvement---Example: Social Workers for Intercultural Collaboration
*Enlisting corporations and nonprofits----in all climates we need EQ.
*Creating more times for face-to-face conversations
*Ad agencies get involved and we see billboards everywhere in Houston about EQ
4) Pathway: What are some key steps for us to move forward in next 12 months?
We talked about another question that may be useful to us: What are some goals we may work toward?
*Orientation about our work individually and collectively
*Sharing of resources/modules
*Common training/common language
*Honor and respect the work of others
*Having people debrief with each other about their plans
*Archive of activities, resources, trainings going on in Houston (all on website)
*Creating a “lab school”
*Creating a Houston Conference which would be about collaboration among organizations---Six Seconds, Search Institute, Link Up Houston, University of Houston, Rice University, etc. This is not like the Big Tent Conference, as that is a national conference. It would be for Houston---for Families and School, perhaps. Also we would see if we could have scholarships for students to attend. Conferences seem to be very expensive. We are looking at it being accessible.
For the Houston Conference: “Infuse EQ into the fabric of the community.”
Brene Brown could maybe be a keynote speaker. Sandra Lopez may be another person to be involved to speak.
*We could have on the website: What is good for kids? On that, we would have various programs and organizations that do the work.
*Maybe EQ Allies of Houston and Beyond could be the conduit to enabling more collaboration among organizations.
*Having a pilot with metrics involved to share research---Debbie mentioned the SEI-YV assessment for 7-18 year old youth could be used as a metric.
5) Allies: Who do we know who would like to help with this -- "influencers" and "change agents"?
*University of Houston (U of H Social Work Department) and Rice University professors
*Other foundations and people (request to get back to each other about names)
6) Commitment: What actions am I willing to take to make this happen?
*We had various people sharing their interest, but we will need more time for commitment to specific actions.
7) Establish: Next Meeting Date/Time and Place
*Debbie will get back to the group with a Doodle survey in prep for next meeting.
