Module 5b: Navigating the Gradebook - quizzes & exams

5.7 EXAMS AND QUIZZES

5.7.1 Exams and Quizzes

In addition to submitted assignments, many courses have exams and quizzes embedded in Atrio. Multiple choice and matching questions will be automatically graded and you will need to manually grade open-response questions. Remember to publish exam and quiz scores once you are ready for students to view their grades.

Note: Depending on the quiz settings, student quiz grades may not appear in the Gradebook for Section Instructors to view until the quiz is closed. If this is the case, the Course Lead will need to close the quiz before section instructors can review and publish student grades.

Note: Publish scores only once all grading and grade edits have been made to ensure all grades carry over to the Gradebook. If edits are made to grades at the quiz level after publishing, those edits will not carry over to the Gradebook. Any new edits after publishing will have to be manually adjusted directly in the Gradebook.

Note: To access quizzes and exams within Atrio, navigate to a specific course section, click Coursework > Assessments > and make your selection.

5.7.2 QUIZ SETTINGS AND TIMING

Some quizzes and exams will have a specific date and time that students are allowed to access the quiz. There also may be an embedded timer that limits the amount of time a student has to take their quiz or exam. This information can be found on the Info page for the quiz or exam. Ensure to scroll to the bottom of the Info page to view the information related to a specific quiz or exam.

5.7.3 QUIZ REPORTS

The following video demonstrates the Quiz Reports feature that allows you to access a breakdown of the results from quizzes and exams.

5.7.4 QUIZ PASSWORDS AND STUDENT REVIEW

All quizzes have student review settings that determine if and when students can see their grades and review their answers. Some quizzes may also require a password. The following video explains how to locate and interpret your quiz settings.

Note: If, under the Later, While the Quiz is still Open column Marks is not checked, student quiz grades will not appear in Gradebook for Section Instructors to view until the quiz is closed. After the course lead closes the quiz, section instructors can review and publish student grades.

This demo video will discuss the following:

    • Updating Quiz Settings for an Assessment

    • Locating Quiz Passwords

    • Finding Quiz Settings/Information (Name, Attempts Allowed, etc.)

    • Modifying Student Review Options

      • During the Exam Settings

      • Immediately After the Exam Settings

      • Later, While the Quiz is Still Open Settings

      • After the Quiz is Closed Settings

5.7.5 STUDENT REVIEW EXAMPLES

Example #1: While the student is taking the quiz they can only view the answer they selected. However, students can view their grade and review their answers to see how they did, what the correct answers are, and what their grade is for two minutes after they submit their answers. After the two minutes has elapsed, students can no longer review any aspect of their quiz; if the student did not take that opportunity to review their quiz, they will not be able to come back later.

Example #2: In this case, students can only view their own answers when they are taking the quiz. However, when students click submit, they will be unable to see their grade or their answers. Students must wait until the quiz is formally closed by the Course Lead for all sections. Once the quiz is closed students will be able to see their grades and answers.

Example #3: Here, students can see their grades and review their answers at any point after they submit their quiz, even after the term ends and they complete the course.

Note: These settings may be different for each quiz, and will affect all sections of the course. They can only be changed if the course lead requests a modification through Faculty Support or the course iteration process. If you have questions about the review settings for your course, please reach out to your Course Lead.

5.7.6 Accessing STUDENT SUBMISSIONS Overview

To view student scores on quizzes/exams that are automatically graded with no manually graded questions, simply navigate to the Overview and Regrade option in the Quiz Reports menu within that quiz/exam.

Once in Overview and Regrade, you will find a table showing when students started and completed the quiz, how long it took them to complete, and a record of their question attempts.

Clicking on an individual question will allow you to see that student’s response.

Note: Once an automatically graded quiz is closed by the Course Lead, the grades will transfer to the Gradebook automatically.

The following image shows your view of student scores on an automatically graded exam/quiz:

5.7.7 MANUAL GRADING

The following video provides detailed instructions on how to grade open response questions on a quiz or exam:

5.7.8 QUIZ OVERRIDES (EXTENDING TIME OR ALLOWING A RETAKE)

There may be situations in which you wish to allow students to retake a quiz or exam or allow more time than originally provided. The following document outlines the steps you will take to grant students a quiz override in these situations.

This document will provide instructions for adding quiz overrides:

Quiz Overrides (Extending Time or Allowing a Retake) Reference Guide

5.7.9 CLOSING EXAMS (COURSE LEADS ONLY)

Course Leads typically have a different level of access in Atrio called the Course Coordinator role; this access allows them to view all sections of a course. Faculty with this role have the ability to close quizzes and exams that are embedded in Atrio. When a Course Lead closes a quiz or exam, this applies to all sections simultaneously and prevents any students from attempting the exam after it is closed.

To close a quiz, follow these steps:

      1. Locate the quiz/exam in Atrio and click Edit & Close on the right under the Quiz Reports menu.

      2. After selecting Edit & Close, click Close Quiz.

IMPORTANT: Clicking Close Quiz will have the following effects:

  • Exam will immediately be closed for all sections.

  • Students will not be able to attempt the exam after this time.

  • The quiz review settings for After the quiz is closed will go into effect (see earlier section, Quiz Passwords & Student Review Settings, for more details).

  • If, under the Later, While the Quiz is still Open column Marks is not checked, student quiz grades will not appear in Gradebook for section instructors to view until the quiz is closed. After the course lead closes the quiz, section instructors can review and publish student grades.

5.8 PROCTORING EXAMs

5.8.1 OVERVIEW

There are a few ways to proctor an assessment in Atrio and Zoom. Many assessments are proctored live in class by a professor, while others are “take-home” assessments that may have software designed for proctoring enabled. There are also situations where students self-record themselves taking the assessment and turn those recordings in to the professor. The following sections will describe best practices in proctoring a live exam and resources around utilizing proctoring software.

5.8.2 Proctoring IN LIVE SESSION

Many exams are proctored by the professor live in class. Below are a list of items to consider and steps to follow when proctoring an exam live:

      • Set expectations and reinforce prior to class to be in a quiet space with no distractions.

      • Enforce that students are always on camera and always muted (there is a mute all option that hosts can enable).

      • Be in Gallery View.

      • Turn chat to Host Only - students can private chat to the professor and the professor can chat to the group. Directions on how to change this chat setting can be found here.

      • Review all time limits and any specifics to the assessment.

      • Begin recording.

      • Share password with students (via chat or document).

5.8.3 STUDENT SELF-RECORDING Instructions

Some programs and courses may have assignments, quizzes, or exams, that require a student to record themselves in their live session classroom.

We have provided these directions for you as a faculty member to review so you are aware of how students will be trained to record themselves in their live session classroom.

These directions can be shared with your students when preparing them for their self-recording. If your students have any specific questions about how the technology will function for them, direct them to reach out to their student support adviser.

5.9 FACULTY FEEDBACK - GRADING & PUBLISHING FOR EXAMS & QUIZZES

5.9.1 HAS THE QUIZ BEEN CLOSED

In order for grades to be transferred from a quiz or exam to the gradebook it must be closed by the Course Lead (instructions can be found in section 5.7.9 Closing Exams). If grades for a multiple choice quiz, or a quiz where all manually graded questions have been graded, are not appearing in your gradebook, you must contact your Course Lead to have them close the quiz.

5.9.2 ADDING GRADES (EXTERNAL)

Once a quiz or exam has had its manually graded questions graded, and has been closed by the Course Lead, the grades for the assessment can be found in the Gradebook similar to any other graded items. These grades can be changed or published in the same way as any other Gradebook item. Please refer to section 5.4.1 Adding Grades for guidance around adding grades.

5.9.3 PROVIDING COMMENTS ON QUIZZES/EXAMS

Providing comments or feedback on a quiz or exam is the same as commenting on any other graded item. See 5.4.2 Leaving Comments for information on that process.

Note: While you can provide feedback on individual manually graded questions in a quiz, depending on your exam settings students may not be able to see that feedback. It is always advised to put feedback/comments in the comments section as shown in the provided feedback section.

5.9.4 PUBLISHING EXAM/QUIZ GRADES

Publishing Exam or Quiz grades follows the same process for publishing as other Gradebook items and information on that process can be found in section 5.4.3 Publishing Grades to Students

5.10.4 NOTIFICATIONS FOR CRITIQUEIT RESPONSES

In-line annotation notifications alert faculty and students when a new annotation or reply has been left on an assignment. Faculty will receive a notification when a student leaves an annotation or a reply on a graded and published assignment. Notifications will contain the name of the assignment and a link to the assignment so faculty can view the new comment or reply from their student.

Notifications are sent via email twice a day and appear in the mobile-app notification stream in real time. If you choose to not receive notifications for annotations or replies from students, you can opt out of email, mobile-app, or both from your settings page in the Atrio.

Check For Understanding

Please complete the Check for Understanding quiz linked below. In this quiz, you will be asked to provide your name and university e-mail address. By filling in this section, you are confirming you have completed Module 6: Navigating the Gradebook of Teaching Online with 2U Technology.

TO RECAP:

  • Each course has different Gradebook assessments that will need to be graded.

  • Section instructors should schedule their first Gradebook training after their first assignment is due.

  • Course designers and leads help to manage exams. Therefore, course designer/lead training should be completed prior to students submitting their first assignment or exam.

  • Refer to Module 6a and Module 6b for further information on how to grade different assessments in the Gradebook.
