The Planetary Boundaries Fresco is designed to be widely shared, but to ensure its accessibility and financial sustainability, different rights of use apply depending on how and where the workshop is facilitated. Before diving into the details, it's important to understand that the Fresco was created with a very specific educational purpose in mind. The workshop is based on scientific research and has been carefully designed as a 3-to-3.5-hour, collaborative systems thinking experience. Therefore, it is not to be modified without prior consent, and there are clear guidelines for both non-profit and for-profit use (read: in a voluntary and business context). The full terms are outlined in the Planetary Boundaries Fresco User License (available on the Legal Notices page), which covers trademark and copyright ownership, commercial and non-commercial use, sponsorship and communication rules, the non-modifiable nature of the tool, and more.
The Planetary Boundaries Fresco is a collaborative, educational and communicational tool built around 42 cards. These cards, their links, and the structure of the workshop (from intro to closure) form a cohesive whole that should not be altered unless discussed with and approved by a board member of 1er degré. This means:
Do not add to, modify, remove or rearrange the official cards (except optional ones, e.g., Finite Resources (41)).
Do not create derivatives of the workshop or reproduce materials with logos or altered credits.
Do not shorten the duration of the workshop (it is meant to last a minimum of 3 hours) or turn it into a lecture (the interactive and collaborative format is essential).
The workshop materials are protected under the CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence (Link to Creative Commons), which means that facilitators of the workshop are free to copy and redistribute materials for personal use or as part of communications, as long as they give appropriate credit (Planetary Boundaries Fresco, Fresque des Frontières Planétaires, or other official languages, with a link to the website or associated social media channels), do no use them for commercial purposes and do not modify them or create derivative works.
After completing the facilitation training, you are a volunteer facilitator:
If you wish to facilitate workshops for another company or institute, other than for your own colleagues, on a paid basis, you must first get some experience with the workshop and obtain professional facilitator status.
To facilitate within your own company or for higher education students, we ask you to familiarise yourself with the content and first facilitate at least two general public workshops.
Without signing a contract with the association, you cannot facilitate for external organisations or clients.
Workshops and training sessions may include a small participation fee that helps support the mission of 1er degré: covering operating costs, developing tools, and spreading environmental and planetary literacy. Facilitators volunteer their time for public sessions. We are committed to making the workshop accessible to all. If a participation fee poses a barrier, please contact a board member directly or via finance@1erdegre.earth, as arrangements can be made.
You can facilitate for free if the following applies:
When you facilitate for your own students as part of education.
When you facilitate in an informal setting, such as for family, friends, or members of your association.
When you facilitate a public workshop at a venue or event that doesn't charge a participation fee, which is sometimes the case at public spaces, open general public events, or conferences.
A pilot session with good reason (e.g. a test session before large-scale roll-out) – contact the association if this is the case!
Any other situation would require a participation fee, but how much depends on your audience. Anyone trained can volunteer to facilitate sessions (read: you don't make any money from the session, but you are allowed to receive compensation for travel and venue costs) for the general public, education, or within your own or a partner company/association. If you facilitate for colleagues of your own company or partner organisation (one you often work or collaborate with), or offer a workshop during an internal event:
Students at a school or university (4€)
Employees of a school, university, associations, foundations or public organisations (8€)
Enterprises (12€)
For the cases mentioned above, you can request an invoice at finance@1erdegre.earth and either send it to those who received the session or pay it yourself (if collected in person). For public in-person sessions, it is often easier to put the session on the platform and have the participants pay themselves. In that case, we handle a standard 10€ full fare or 5€ reduced rate. For more details, facilitators can refer to the Facilitation Framework available on the international facilitation space.
