- CONFERENCE FOR ALL PEDAGOGICAL WORKERS OF PRIMARY SCHOOL IVANA CANKARJA VRHNIKA
The fact is that our town Vrhnika is environmentally very conscious. It was the first Slovene municipality that joined the initiative »Zero waste«.
In September 2017 we hosted an expert from a local recycling center, Mr. Jernej Fefer who is also an independent environmental counsellor. He held an interesting eye-opening lecture and presented how our everyday habits affect climate change and how sustainable attitude is urgently necessary in order to save our planet. We learned a lot of facts and realised how endangered our planet really is.
Mr. Fefer is also the author of independent environmental coursebooks, intended for young learners (mostly recycling topics), but also for older students (global learning – sustainability). Our school will integrate environmental education into the curriculum, using the mentioned coursebooks (grades, 3,4,5 and 8).
Each year ninth grade students organize 4 actions which take place at the recycling center, where parents and other relatives of all students at Primary school Ivana Cankarja Vrhnika bring used paper.
This school year we already had one such action where we collected approximately 5 tons of used paper. The recycling center pays for this paper and the money goes to the school fund or to the individual class, who spends the money for final excursions or socially threatened students.
In January 2018 we invited HUMANITAS, society for human rights and supportive action, to hold workshops for all pedagogy workers at Primary school Ivana Cankarja Vrhnika. 120 employers first had a joint introductory part where the hosts introduced various terms and facts about globalization and its consequences. Then we attended one of the 4 workshops:
Workshop on the concept of the development and its various meanings and who influences our understanding of this concept. Furthermore, we discussed how our perception of sustainable development affects our lifestyles and habits. Workshop also focused on the concept of privilege and power.
Climate change already has and will have strong impact on several people who were forced to move from their home country due to the consequences. Workshop also focused on various challenges of the migrations, related to human rights, stereotypes and prejudice.
Workshop focused on the role of us as consumers. How can we be a part of the problems and also solutions by (ir)responsible choices made in todays modern world.
The expression »FALSE NEWS« was announced to be the word of the year in 2016. The workshop focused on the phenomenon of spreading false news, which is an old, but in the era of digitalisation also enforced phenomenon. We learnt how to recognise false news and how to authenticate media information.
50 students attended the workshop on how to recycle electronic waste, where are the locations and what kind of devices go to which container.
-E-cikliram in e-odpadke zbiram!
-E-cikliramo, varčujemo in svet obvarujemo!
-Ne blefiraj, E-cikliraj!
-E-cikliraj in onesnaževanju pot zapiraj!
NOVEMBER 2017 - making products to be sold at school's Christmas bazaar, products were mostly made of recycled materials and the income from the Bazaar was put in the school's fund for socially threatened pupils.
Like every year, products were mostly made of recycled materials and the income from the Bazaar was put in the school's fund for socially threatened pupils.
Like many other children around the world, our school as well decided to follow Greta Thunberg's example and strike for the Climate change. First of all, individual teachers familiarized students about her concern and motivated them for the urgent change of our behaviour for the sake of our planet. Thus, we set up a delegation which took part at the main and the first such climate change strike in the capital city of Ljubljana (March 15th 2019), while others (around 100 students) decided to strike on the streets of Vrhnika. They carefully prepared for the event by making banners that they used when marching.
