In terms 5 and 6 we will be building on the skills the children have already developed and supporting them to reach the Early Learning Goals:
Talk about the lives of the people around them and their roles in society.
Know some similarities and differences between things in the past and now, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class.
Understand the past through settings, characters and events encountered in books read in class and storytelling.
During Terms 5 and 6 we will focus on enhancing the skills needed to meet the Early Learning Goals. Children will have opportunities to talk about the lives of the people around them and their roles in society, discuss similarities and differences between things in the past and now, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class, and understand the past through settings, characters and events encountered in books read in class and storytelling. Our topics – Living And Growing and By The Seaside -, PSHE learning and RE learning will support the children to meet these goals as well as learning though our child initiated time.
In terms 5 and 6 we will be building on the skills the children have already developed and supporting them to reach the Early Learning Goals:
Describe their immediate environment using knowledge from observation, discussion, stories, non-fiction texts and maps.
Know some similarities and differences between different religious and cultural communities in this country, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class.
Explain some similarities and differences between life in this country and life in other countries, drawing on knowledge from stories, nonfiction texts and (when appropriate) maps.
Through our topics, children will have opportunities in both child initiated time and adult directed learning, to describe their immediate environment using knowledge from observation, discussion, stories, non-fiction texts and maps. In RE across Terms 5 and 6 we learn about world faith stories, building on our knowledge of Christian stories. This learning will support the children in their knowledge and skills for understanding the world. Children will enhance their skills with knowing some similarities and differences between different religious and cultural communities in this country, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class. They will be able to explain some similarities and differences between life in this country and life in other countries, drawing on knowledge from stories, nonfiction texts and (when appropriate) maps.
In terms 5 and 6 we will be building on the skills the children have already developed and supporting them to reach the Early Learning Goals:
Explore the natural world around them, making observations and drawing pictures of animals and plants.
Know some similarities and differences between the natural world around them and contrasting environments, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class.
Understand some important processes and changes in the natural world around them, including the seasons and changing states of matter.
Our topic learning throughout the year will support the children to meet their early learning goals for ‘understanding the world’. In terms 5 and 6 we will consolidate all that we have learnt alongside our new topics which focus on the natural world. Our topic in Term 5 is ‘Living and Growing’ and we will read lots of stories such as:
The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Eric Carle
Goodbye Winter Hello Spring, Kenard Pak
Jody’s Bean, Malachy Doyle
The Tiny Seed, Eric Carle
The Growing Story, Ruth Krauss
Eddie’s garden Eddie’s Garden And How To Make Things Grow, Sarah Harland
Through these stories children will learn the life cycle of a butterfly, the lifecycle of plants, how people also live and grow and change over time as well as the changing of seasons. We will get caterpillars and observe the lifecycle of a butterfly up close. We also hope to get frogspawn to develop and enhance our understanding of lifecycles further. Our writing will link to our topic so we can develop our writing fluency as well as our understanding of the world. Our living and growing topic will be enriched with our school trip to the Rare Breeds Centre and Forest School.
Our topic in term 6 is ‘By The Seaside’. We will read stories such as:
The Blue Giant, Katie Cottle
Somebody Swallowed Stanley, Sarah Roberts,
Hello Lighthouse, Sophie Blackall
The Storm Whale, Benji Davies
Look What I Found at the Seaside, Moira Butterfield and Jesus Verona
Ocean Full of Wonder, Anna Smithers
Wave, Suzy Lee.
Through this topic the children will learn about habitats, lighthouses, seaside through the ages, beach safety and RNLI, sea life/sea creatures, oceans around the world and how to keep our oceans clean.
In term 5 children will be doing a school trip to the Rare Breeds Centre as well as attending Forest School Sessions. These will be opportunities for children to explore the natural world around them, making observations and drawing pictures of animals and plants. Children will also continue to have child initiated play outside which will enhance their knowledge of similarities and differences between the natural world around them and contrasting environments, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class. Through our learning of the life cycle of a butterfly and stories about seasons children will understand some important processes and changes in the natural world around them; the seasons and changing states of matter.
