Do you ever feel like you want to be smarter than you are? If you can imagine a more intelligent you, does that take the sting out of your current intellectual challenges? Maybe it’s even helped you get through a tough spot or two? You’re not alone. Many people who really want more intelligence feel this way.

What you eat and drink, how you sleep, and the activities you engage in all have a profound effect on the health of your brain.

Our genetics account for 50 to 80 percent of our intelligence. So if your child tests poorly for IQ and you're thinking something's not right, don't worry, intelligence is changeable, can be learned and there are ways to stimulate the brain to improve overtime.

This article suggests ways to keep a healthy brain and sharp memory, including eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and challenging your brain with puzzles and other kinds of brain-working activities.

Improve your observation skills to boost IQ

Exercising your powers of observation isn't just an entertaining exercise in self-awareness. It's a great way to sharpen your intelligence, too. Become a better observer, and you can increase your ability to learn, your capacity to recognize patterns, and your aptitude for learning new abilities. If you're practicing something you already know how to do, you're probably using what's known as procedural memory, rather than learning new skills.

Other ways to improve intelligence

Increasing overall intelligence and cognitive skills is not something that can be done overnight. However, by practicing several simple daily habits, a person may increase the likelihood of increasing his or her intelligence. Here are some suggestions below:

Regular exercises - Exercising regularly does not only boost energy, it also helps brain function. Staying physically active does not have to be expensive, it can be done at home with yoga, walking, and biking and it is more beneficial when done regularly.

Adequate sleep - Sleep recharges the body and the brain. While you sleep, all your memories are consolidated and it enhances your brain's ability to learn new things.

Meditation - This is not only a great way to reduce stress, anxiety and mood, it also has cognitive effects which is a great way to become smarter.

Coffee - Drinking coffee in moderation enhances attention thereby promoting learning and improves mental performance.

Green Tea - The caffeine in green tea and its other components help support brain function. According to studies, it increases attention and improves memory.

Nutritious foods - Eating healthy is another way to improve intelligence. Include in your diet nutrient-rich foods containing omega-3 fatty acids such as sea foods; flavonoids such as berries and grains; and Vitamin K such as kale and spinach.

Playing an Instrument - This involves skills like auditory perception, physical coordination, memory and pattern recognition that increases knowledge and comprehension and enhance brain functioning.

Read - Reading stimulates every part of your brain and therefore helps boost your intelligence. It also improves memory and vocabulary.

Socialize - This enhances mental fitness. if you find it difficult to meet people and create relationships, consider activities that promote socialization such as joining a dance or exercise class and volunteering in a community service.

Continue learning - This doesn't mean going to school after graduating. It means cultivating/improving yourself by picking up a new hobby, studying and learning new things.
