Andy O’Boyle Appointed as Man Utd Deputy Football Director

Andy O’Boyle has been named as Manchester United’s next Deputy Football Director, the club confirmed on Monday. It is not yet clear to what extent the appointment will affect the shape of United’s side in the future, but O’Boyle has a strong reputation.


O’Boyle, who will take up the role at the end of the month, is a seasoned football executive who's known for his previous role as the Head of Elite Performance at the English Premier League Table.

He was hired by Manchester United to provide a robust leadership in all of the departments in the club. He will provide assistance to the current Football Director of the club, John Murtough. Together, they will go hand-in-hand in presiding over the football strategy of the club across the Academy, men's and women's team.


The appointment also indicates his comeback to the club after being previously hired as a head coach to the Academy. He has been a key part of the development of young players at the club, and among his previous students was Marcus Rashford, who is now a regular in the first team.

"I am delighted to be joining the club as the new Deputy Football Director. I have been a lifelong fan of Manchester United and I am excited to be taking part in the next chapter of the club. With the first team being supervised by Erik ten Hag and the Academy continues to be flourishing. It was good to be back," said O'Boyle.


"While serving the Premier League for five years was a wonderful experience, I have always wanted to return to the club where I first started my career. My goal is to bring the club back to where it belongs - at the top of the Table-Points-Premier-League," he added.


O'Boyle was about to finish his UEFA Pro License in a few months, additionally, he is preparing to take up a doctorate degree after he already completed his MSc in Sports Science at the University of Nottingham.

Previous roles


During his time at the Premier League, O'Boyle was responsible for guiding the clubs when it came to sports science and medicine, loan management, psychology, and talent recruitment.


He was also one of the core personnels that outlines the response of the Premier League to the Covid-19 pandemic. They partnered with the clubs and the government to ensure that the protocols will be implemented successfully throughout the football events.


He considered himself as a permanent supporter of Manchester United, where he also played in his youth prior to studying sports science and became a coach.
