Depending on the degree of the clog in your toilet, you can actually get it fixed following these simple to follow guide. A toilet clog can range from a partial obstruction to total blockage. It can also result in your toilet drain backing up in your basement or bath tub.

Different plumbing methods are used for each peculiar toilet problem, the most common being using a plunger. Home owners turned plumbers through DIY programs can unclog their toilet using the plunger.

Don't wait until your toilet is totally blocked. Common toilet drain problems sign is when the level of water in the toilet bowl rises instead of going down the drain when you flush. Use your plunger in this case, to clear the drain.

Follow these 5 simple steps to clear a clogged toilet using a plunger

1. Buy a plunger from a plumbing supply store if you don't have any and wear a protective rubber glove

2. Insert your plunger in the toilet bowl and let the bell-like part fill up with water.

3.Set the opening of the flange over your toilet tunnel. (that is the drain hole) holding the plunger firmly at the extended handle one hand above the other as illustrated in the image above.

4 Thrust the plunger down the toilet tunnel bending it just as seen in the illustrative image and pushing gradually to avoid an explosion, then apply some pressure to force the obstruction out. You need some kind of pressure to force the blockage out but be careful here so that you don't splash the whole mess.

5. Repeat the pushing many times until the blockage is cleared.

As soon as the clog is cleared, the standing water runs freely down the drain. Check this as you push and if the water in the toilet bowl runs down freely then you know that the clog is cleared.

Congratulations as you have added another title to your resume: home owner + drain plumber.

If however, this process is not able to clear your blocked drain, you may want to consult a professional drain cleaner. (Which is recommended)
