Reptiles, Fish and Amphibians

This course will focus on the natural curiosity and love children have for animals, specifically reptiles, fish and amphibians.  Students will compare and contrast these creatures by looking at different factors including body structure, food sources and habitat.   Live animals will allow students to compare and contrast reptiles, fish and amphibians and see how animal adaptations help them survive in their complex environments!

Exploring Seeds, leaves and plants

In this course, we will dig in the dirt, play with plants, sample seeds, look at leaves, and explore ecosystems. Join us as we learn all about plants and how they interact with their surrounding environment.

Take Me to an NC Park

Have you ever visited a State or National Park? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a park ranger? If the answer is yes, then Take me to an NC Park is perfect for you! This expedition will explore the State Parks of North Carolina and all they have to offer. By the end of this course you will become a certified NC Junior Ranger as recognized by The Friends of State Parks.

Who Me, a Scientist?

Scientists study all different kinds of things from tiny seeds in different soils to the vast depths of the universe; from raging tornadoes to kitchen chemistry; from architectural designs to how our decisions affect our environment, and so much more! In this expedition you will learn more about a diverse selection of Scientists, and experience some of the fascinating things they have discovered, built, imagined, and researched! One day YOU might be one of the Scientists that other students learn about!

Take a Hike

Do you like to go for hikes? Would you like to be able to do that more often at school? In this course, you will go for a hike every day and make connections to the outdoors in science, social studies, math, literacy, the arts, and your health. Join us for an awesome adventure exploring our school grounds as we TAKE A HIKE!

3, 2, 1 Blast Off!

Have you ever wondered about Space? Have you ever been curious about the people who explore it?  This expedition will teach you about our Solar System and the modern explorers who helped discover it. Your class will create a living museum, explore planets and have the opportunity to share your learning with others. So, put on your spacesuit, buckle up and enjoy the ride as we BLAST OFF into Space!

Global Goals

Are you a creative, empathetic, environmentally-minded citizen who is curious about the world around you? Do you want to help build a better world? Join this expedition as we learn about the Global Goals, create a peace path and nature art, learn about a circular economy, and reuse, repair, or repurpose an object for the wellbeing of the people in our community.

Energy Makes the World go Round

Are you interested in making a difference at your school? Do you want to be a part of a team that increases awareness and improves energy efficiency at our school? If you said yes, then this expedition is for you! Be part of the change and learn how energy makes the world go round, what energy conservation is and why it is important. You will explore energy through hands-on experiments and research. Learn what YOU can do to conserve energy right now as part of an energy saving team that seeks out ways to make your school a better place to learn and work. Think outside the bulb and be part of a brighter tomorrow!

4H Explorers

Do you want to get a chance to collaborate with other students just like you throughout North Carolina?  4H Explorers will be an opportunity to participate in the nationally recognized 4H program through  experimentation, inquiry and investigation.  This course will focus around soil solutions,  the importance of insects and gardening!  At the completion of this course students will be awarded a 4H leadership certificate from our local North Carolina 4H extension office.

Green STREAM

Green STREAM is an Expedition that utilizes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and also incorporates Reading, and Art. During this 8-9 week course, students will be immersed in 3 distinct engineering projects. Each project is directly connected to our environment. The projects are; Using Nanotechnology To Clean Up Oil Spills, Clean Storm Drains = Clean Oceans, and Rooftop Gardens. Students who choose to embark on this Expedition will learn to think like engineers as they create and implement solutions for authentic issues that are posing threats to our environment.

Let's Go Lifecycling

This course will examine the life cycles of plants and animals (amphibious, aquatic, insect, and mammal). Students will observe and study the different life stages, how they are alike and different, and what is required to complete those lifecycles. The opportunity to grow plants and nurture life will be included.

PONDering Life

This Expedition focuses on diverse life cycles and inheritance of traits in aquatic plants and animals. It will be combined with an inquiry-based approach to rigorous and authentic science instruction as students ask questions and define problems related to the topic. As they make models, set up investigations, and gather evidence, students will make claims that include ideas about systems, patterns, and cause-effect relationships.
