NOTE: TNL (The Ninja League) is a fantasy Ninja Warrior league hosted on the simulator "Ninja Machine", which is made by Alex Cunningham.
For the first time in six months, the DC Defenders, managed by Season 2 champion Jybern, finally made the playoffs again. After a three-season wait for a playoff bid, the Defenders’ return to the postseason ended much earlier than expected.
"I think that it was all right," Jybern said. "It was better than my previous three (seasons). We were able to make some adjustments to the lineup. That did help me make the playoffs, but unfortunately, we ended up getting swept. That was kind of sad."
In the end, the Defenders (23-8) fell to the No. 3 Oakland Invaders in a four-game sweep. It was closer than it looked, though — each of the four games were decided by 11 points or less, with margins of 63-61, 55-54 (overtime), 69-58, and 54-46. Despite the loss, Jybern recognized that the playoff berth itself was an improvement over his previous two seasons, where he missed the postseason both times (play-in exit in Season 6, missed postseason in Season 7).
"It was really sad because I had put in a lot to get to that point," Jybern said. "But I was glad I was able to make it to the playoffs. I can't say I was a decent contender for the (championship), but I was a better contender than the past few seasons."
Looking ahead, Jybern is focused more on the future than dwelling on last season’s sweep. He believes his offseason moves will help elevate the team’s performance in Season 9.
"We tried to make some fixes (for the upcoming season)," Jybern said. "Like we got Stefano Ghisolfi and Bassa Mawem. Even though people say that they aren't good, they're not going to be my Stage Three pieces... I think that'd be a consistent and good lineup, so that way, we don't have to rely on just our Stage Three."
Despite the frustration of falling short last season, Jybern remains optimistic for the future. He’s hopeful that his new additions will perform up to standard and contribute to the team’s success.
"I think that it was a pretty productive offseason," Jybern said. "I think that hopefully — at least with these moves — it could bring me a little bit up from where I was, and hopefully, Stefano and Bassa can perform up to standards."
The ultimate goal for Jybern remains clear: restoring DC’s former glory and returning to the heights of past seasons, such as when the Defenders made it to the TNL Finals in Seasons 2 and 4, winning the championship in the former.
"That way, I can become one of the teams, like one of the TNL’s elites. Because at the end of the day, the main thing I want is to restore DC's former glory and get back to where I was in the early seasons."
Jybern's first opportunity to test his improvements will come in Round 1 against the Baltimore Bandits on Monday, March 24, in the much-anticipated "War in Washington" clash.
The matchup with the Bandits should be a high-stakes, emotional affair, as both teams will be looking to make a statement to kick off the season. Jybern’s leadership, combined with the team’s new acquisitions, will be put to the test. How the Defenders respond to this challenge could define the trajectory of their season and whether they can truly reclaim their spot among the league's elite.
