The Patient Charter at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital

What is the Patient Charter?

The RNOH Patient Charter, co-produced by patients from the Patient Experience Co-Production Group and over 70 RNOH Staff, comprises ‘I’ Statements describing what our patients would like our services to look and feel like and 8 corresponding ‘We’ statements outlining how we are aiming to respond – a huge thank you to everyone who has given their time to this.

The Charter has been approved by the Trust Board and was shortlisted for a HSJ Award. It is an important new tool to support delivery of the Trust Value ‘Patients First, Always’ providing:

· A description of the RNOH Trust standard for patient experience

and

· A framework to support patient engagement and co-production

At the heart of RNOH vision is a world leading patient experience, continuous learning and improvement embodied in our Trust Value: ‘patients first, always

But, how do we make this a reality?

At the Trust, we have a vision of patients and carers who are at the heart of the decisions being made at the RNOH.

In this vision patients are involved as equal partners in improvement projects from the very beginning. They support in co-designing our initiatives alongside substantive staff and other volunteers

At present we have pockets of excellence around the Trust, truly outstanding examples of patient co-producing designs and developments.

This though is not always consistent.

...So what can we do better?

With this programme of work we want to model co-production in action, so that this patient partnership becomes our way of doing things at the RNOH. Over the last year we have developed our new Patient Experience Co-Production Group. Membership includes patients, volunteers and staff who provide the following:

  1. Co-Production of the RNOH Patient Charter

  2. Support a range of quality improvement initiatives

  3. Education and training
