Although the Trojan horse was a devious and clever way for the Greeks to enter the city of Troy, it was far from a perfect method. Partial historical records seem to greatly romaticize the event, with Virgil, Sophocles, and Euripides all basing some of their most famous works on the event. Placement of the event in the timeline of history is illogical, as the story has fallen into mythology. Every account of the event is seen as legendary in the present day—nothing more than a misrepresentation by ancient historians who wished to portray history under their lenses. No modern historian takes the whole account as accurate. Distortion came upon it from the very beginning.

Though it can be seen as set in stone, history is a fluid, incoherent, messy array of conflicting stories. Historians analyze every account they can find to apply one more stroke to the infinite canvas that is human history. Every pottery shard, half-written notebook, tree, street, tool, and wreck tells its own story.

Some will jump to conclusions straight away after seeing one of these archaeological artifacts. Unknowingly biasing accounts even further. Real historians take it all in. New findings and research published is analyzed thoroughly and compared to their catalogues of information prior to slot it in with the rest of the timeline. All too often stories scream but remain unheard, and with every salvaged artifact allows us to more accurately understand where we come from. More and more we are able to add to the canvas, correcting and adjusting old strokes as we go. Even though we know we can never get back to the past, we know it is crucial that we understand our roots.

Of the several billion people alive today, there are those whose stories are not even told now. For some, the canvas of history will never have them painted.
