Our Mission

We seek to (1) increase VISIBILITY of LGBTQ2S+ professionals in STEM by highlighting their work and experiences, both professional and personal; (2) ENRICH and INSPIRE LGBTQ2S+ students, early career professionals, and allies; (3) increase cross-discipline COMMUNICATION and KNOWLEDGE; and (4) AFFIRM that LGBTQ2S+ people belong in all STEM disciplines.

What we do

Scientific QUEERies is a bi-weekly seminar series that welcomes LGBTQ2S+ speakers from all STEM disciplines, to share about their experience. Talks are about their research or area of expertise, or about their personal experiences as a queer person in science (or a mixture of both). These talks run online, Tuesdays 1-2pm mountain time, via zoom, during the fall and winter semesters. We then change it up during the summer, meeting Tuesdays 4-5:30pm mountain time, to re-focus on creating a platform for students to share their research and get feedback in a safe setting (as queer students often are not as comfortable getting feedback in many academic environments). As well as focusing on creating space for queer professionals to teach us skills or discuss important topics in workshops and panels.

We are always looking for inspiring LGBTQ2S+ professionals in STEM to share with us about their work or journey. We have been blessed by the outpouring of support from professionals who have been so willing to share with us. Over the last year we have had scientists ranging from glaciology, infectious disease, climate policy, palliative medicine, cognitive science, statistics and software development, neuroscience, ecology, botany, and more! Representing Universities, Museums, and Institutes across Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Our talks are attended by undergraduate and graduate students, post-docs, industry professionals, and professors from across North America as well (and sometimes Europe), and we have been so inspired by the love and support that the community has shown for our speakers and each other.

If you are interested in giving a talk during the semester, or for a student session during the summer, or have an idea for a workshop, panel, or special event, please get in touch!
