Careers of the Modern Nutritionist

Hosted by the Nutrition Society of Australia, Melbourne group

featuring Dr Nicole Kellow, Dr Jeremy Cottrell, Steph Geddes and Cassie Winter

Modern Nutritionists have a diverse range of careers and it’s become common for them to work in a range of different settings. Making this happen requires flexibility, creative thinking and upskilling.

On the back of a very successful career symposium in March 2018, the Melbourne branch of the NSA is excited to present another relevant career symposium - Careers of the Modern Nutritionist.

Maybe you are studying nutrition and you would like to see where your career might progress. Or maybe you are a qualified nutritionist looking for career paths. Come and see a diverse range of speakers in academia, animal nutrition, sports nutrition and social justice and get a feel for what might be on offer.

In this symposium, you will see how these notable nutritionists have developed their careers. They will provide insight on how their nutrition journey started, where they thought they would be before they graduated and where their career has taken them since.

MEET THE SPEAKERS

Dr Nicole Kellow, Monash University

Dr Nicole Kellow is an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) and Credentialled Diabetes Educator (CDE) with 18 years of clinical experience. She has a research interest in diabetes and the gut microbiota and completed her PhD in 2017 under joint supervision by the Monash University Department of Public Health & Preventive Medicine and the Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Institute. Nicole is currently an NHMRC Early Career Research Fellow in the Monash University Department of Nutrition, Dietetics & Food, where she is investigating the impact of dietary Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs) on infertility.

Dr Jeremy Cottrell, Animal Nutrition, University of Melbourne

Dr. Jeremy Cottrell is a Senior Lecturer in Animal Physiology at the University of Melbourne. Dr Cottrell has over 15 years of Post-Doctoral research experience and his primary research interest is investigating heat stress physiology in livestock. Australia has been disproportionately impacted by the effects of global warming, resulting in increased incidences of “heat stress” in our animal production systems. Heat stress compromises the safe and efficient production of animal products, in part by compromising the integrity of the gastrointestinal tract. Dr Cottrell has a particular focus on using nutritional supplements to protect against the impact of heat stress on the gastrointestinal tract and other organs as an amelioration strategy.

Steph Geddes, Recipe Developer

Steph Geddes is a Registered Nutritionist and holistic foodie. Steph founded Linked – Training & Nutrition with her husband and personal trainer in 2013 and then launched her second business Body Good Food in 2016. Steph has made a name for herself working alongside industry giants Sam Wood and Sally Fitzgibbons, with her recipes and nutrition advice featured in everything from blogs to mainstream media and celebrity cookbooks. She now works as a creative recipe and content developer, corporate wellness coach, cooking class teacher and she loves to share her passion and knowledge around nutrition through the Body Good Food blog, eBooks, seminars, programs, speaking events and ambassador roles.

Cassie Winter, Social Justice and Public Health Nutrition

While completing a Bachelor of Nutrition, Cassie Winter volunteered before being hired to facilitate OzHarvest’s Nutrition Education & Skills Training (NEST) program. After graduation, she was promoted to Program Advisor to redesign NEST to make it appropriate for food insecure participants, incorporate evidence-based content and embed best practices into program delivery and evaluation. Cassie has also participated in a variety of panel discussions, authored articles, delivered guest lectures and sat on expert working groups. This inspired her to study a Master of Public Health at the University of Sydney, to which she received one of few merit-based Commonwealth Supported Places. She is currently focusing her energy on charitable work and completing her studies.
