Welcome to Mrs. A's Reading Skills Tutoring!
ABOUT BECKY ABERNETHY
I have taught hundreds of students of varying academic levels for many years, including college students at Cornell University, junior high students for over 20 years, and perhaps most challenging, my own children for nearly a decade as a homeschooling mom. Regardless of student age or subject matter, I have consistently seen the strong relationship between reading skills proficiency and academic success. Therefore, my mission in tutoring is to provide students with the skills needed to overcome their struggles in reading, writing, or spelling, and to provide a solid foundation for their future learning endeavors.
What will students learn?
Students who struggle with decoding written words, spelling them correctly, and/or writing effectively benefit from a structured language approach. Using a multi-sensory, specific, structured and sequential program allows students to develop the skills they need for these essential tasks. This can aid all students, regardless of their learning style.
In addition, for students who need help in developing their auditory discrimination (hearing sounds correctly), auditory memory size (remembering what they have heard), and auditory sequencing (ordering sounds correctly), I use a pre-reading system to improve ability in these areas prior to beginning the program described above.
Lessons are taught for 55 minutes on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays throughout the year, with a more flexible schedule during school holidays and summer break. Tuition is $45 per 55 minute session, and can be paid out-of-pocket or through a Charter School Purchase Order; I am currently an approved vendor with the iLEAD Exploration Programs and a Community Provider with Sage Oak Charter Schools. Generally, tutoring sessions will take place in my home in La Mirada, with parents welcome to stay in a "listening" role, if desired.
