Why is Mary Running?
I believe that the Eaton Rapids community is a special place to live and raise your family.
I am passionate about continuing and elevating the relationship between the community at large and Eaton Rapids Public Schools. Young people need many role models and caring adults in their lives to support their development and education. They also need opportunities to volunteer and engage in the community.
I have 14 years of experience working in education.
I currently hold a teaching certificate for the State of Michigan and spent 7 years in the classroom. Additionally, I have been a coach for 11 years and spent 7 years working with teens through the YMCA from across the state. I understand the educational system and the issues that face teachers and administrators daily. I also understand how vital it is for parents and the community to be involved in education.
I believe that young people should have a voice in their community.
The rising generation is passionate, motivated and interested in the world around them. They have ideas, thoughts and opinions that are important. And when it comes to creating policy that directly affects them, the youth should definitely be allowed to speak and share their views. Representatives from the ERHS student council should be invited to attend school board meetings and give a report as to their activities, concerns and interests on behalf of the student body. Additionally, I am interested in working with the mayor to create an Eaton Rapids Community Youth Council where they will engage with the City Council.
I believe in civil discourse.
It is easy when discussing a tough topic for emotions, opinions, and even political beliefs to get in the way. And those ideas make us who we are as a person. However, it is important to listen to what others have to say and try to understand their viewpoints. It is important to work together to agree on the facts of the situation, then make a decision on a path forward that will be best for everyone involved. And, it is important to do so in a respectful and professional manner. I am excited to work together with fellow school board members, students, parents, teachers, administrators and the community at large who come from many different backgrounds, beliefs, experiences and areas of expertise.
