Piano Solo Compositions by Laura Tiong

My eight pieces for piano solo were composed between 2007-2021.  They are dedicated to people who are dear to me.

These short pieces suit intermediate to advanced levels piano students who enjoy a soothing and expressive style of music.  The style of writing is inspired by many years of piano teaching to young students as well as my exposure to classical and inspirational church music.  My goal is to write piano music which can move listeners’ hearts which I think should be the whole purpose of composing.

A Farewell Hope, $8 USD

This short piece was first composed in 2007 for all my students at International Music House (IMH) in Kuching, Malaysia before I moved permanently to Brisbane, Australia.  The original title was A Farewell Song to bid all my Malaysian students farewell.  But in 2020, I lengthened this piece and changed the title to A Farewell Hope as this piece was then dedicated to those who needed to say farewell during the Covid-19 pandemic with the hope of meeting up again soon.

The Joy Within, $8 USD

This piece is dedicated to my cousin Alvin Wong’s wedding in 2010.  This is the first wedding piece I wrote for family members and I had the honour of performing it live at Alvin and Felicia’s wedding ceremony in Brisbane.

The Gift Of Love, $12 USD

I had the privilege to perform this piece live at Evelyn and JJ’s wedding ceremony in Korea in 2012.  Evelyn is my younger sister and JungJae (JJ) is my brother-in-law from Korea.

A Joyful Love, $8 USD

This piece was composed for John (my brother) and Michelle's wedding in 2015 in Kuching, Malaysia.  The original composition, which was performed at their wedding reception, was shorter.  This piece was later lengthened into three sections following a suggestion from my piano mentor, Mark Hooper.

Teddy's Song, $8 USD

I composed this piece for my husband, Emeritus Professor Mark Gould, in 2020 to mark our 10th year anniversary of being together.  Similar to Mark’s personality, the character of this piece started with a sense of joy and innocence.  But the middle section exhibits slightly darker mood which reflects the challenges he faced in his life journey.

The Joy In Schubert, $8 USD

This piece is inspired by the fourth movement of Schubert’s piano sonata No.20 in A major, D.959 (Rondo: Allegretto).  Notice the similar key, time signature and the opening bar.  This piece is a tribute to Nina Bass who was my piano duet partner until her passing.  Nina loved playing Schubert’s piano music and this Rondo is one of her favourites.  Both Nina and her husband Ludvik had always believed in me and encouraged me to excel in my musical endeavours.

A Gift for Alain, $8 USD

This piece is composed for my dear friend, Alan Charles, as his 70th birthday gift.  I knew Alan through Chantefique French Choir in Brisbane where he is known as Alain (French name for Alan) and where I served as the choir accompanist for almost a decade.  Alain has always been a great supporter of my music and a dear friend.

A Beautiful Star, $8 USD

This piece is dedicated to Dr. Cathy Likhuta who is a prolific Ukrainian composer and a good friend of mine.  Cathy is not only successful in her career as a composer, she is also very generous, sincere and full of humour as a  friend.  To me, Cathy is just like a beautiful star - shining brightly and bringing out the best in those around her.
