I explore how evolution reshapes the molecular machinery of the heart, examining how natural variation in contractile, metabolic, and regulatory proteins influences cardiovascular function across species. By pairing comparative physiology with targeted genetic studies, I uncover evolutionary modifications that broaden our understanding of cardiac performance. These findings are beginning to inform fresh approaches to cardiac therapeutics grounded in nature’s own solutions.
My work is currently funded by a Junior Leader fellowship from the La Caixa Foundation and I am based at the Spanish National Centre for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC; Madrid, Spain).
