This listserv is dedicated to promoting, protecting, and encouraging open dialogue, multiple perspectives, and the fundamental principles of free expression on our San Luis Obispo and Solano campuses.
It is intended to be an inclusive platform for subscribers (students, staff members, faculty members, and administrators) to share information, discuss events, and collaborate on initiatives related to free speech. Whether you are interested in organizing a speaker series, debating a new (or old/er) university policy, or simply staying informed about free speech issues, your voice will be welcomed.
To help us maintain a respectful and productive environment, please keep the following guidelines in mind:
Be respectful: Treat all subscribers with courtesy, even when you disagree.
Stay on topic: Keep discussions relevant to free speech and related campus issues.
Share responsibly: Be mindful of privacy and the accuracy of the information you share.

Directions for subscribing to or unsubscribing from <freespeech@calpoly.edu>
Method 1 - Sending a message to sympa@calpoly.edu
To Subscribe:
From the email account the user wishes to receive the list messages in, the user sends an email message to sympa@calpoly.edu.
In the subject line of your message, type in: subscribe freespeech FirstName LastName (example: subscribe freespeech Jane Doe).
Leave the message body blank (including any signature lines).
The List Owner(s) will receive an email notification regarding the new subscription.
To Unsubscribe:
From the email account which is subscribed to the list, the user sends a new message to sympa@calpoly.edu.
In the subject line, type in: unsubscribe freespeech.
Leave the message body blank (including any signature lines).
The List Owner(s) and the User will receive email notifications of the unsubscription.
Method 2 - Using a web URL
To Subscribe
If you know the listname you wish to subscribe to, enter the URL https://lists.calpoly.edu/sympa/subscribe/listname in your Web browser, where listname (freespeech) is the actual name of the list.

Click Subscribe.
Click OK when you see the pop-up, “Do you really want to subscribe to list freespeech?”
Subscribe:
If you are signed into Sympa:
At the top of the Sympa page, you will see a message similar to “subscribe: action completed” or “Your request has been forwarded to the list owner”, if this is a moderated membership list. You may also receive an email confirmation, depending on how the list is configured.
If you are not signed into Sympa:
Sympa will ask for your email address.
Enter your primary email address, similar to username@calpoly.edu into the Your email address text box.
Click Submit.
To confirm your identity and prevent someone else from subscribing you, you will receive a confirmation email. The confirmation email was sent to the address provided.
Go to your email, and open the email. It will be from SYMPA (sympa@calpoly.edu).
Find the password included in the email.
Copy the password.
Go back to the Sympa website.
Paste your password into the password textbox.
Click Subscribe.
At the top of the Sympa page you will see a message similar to “subscribe: action completed” or “Your request has been forwarded to the list owner”, if this is a moderated membership list. You may also receive an email confirmation, depending on how the list is configured.
To Unsubscribe
If you know the listname you wish to unsubscribe to, enter the URL https://lists.calpoly.edu/sympa/signoff/listname in your Web browser, where listname (freespeech) is the actual name of the list.
Follow same instructions as subscribe.
