Freedom School Macon

Welcome to the ever-growing website for Macon's Freedom School, running from June 12-July 21, 2017. Freedom School is a national program of the Children's Defense Fund. According to the CDF, "The CDF Freedom Schools® program seeks to build strong, literate, and empowered children prepared to make a difference in themselves, their families, communities, nation and world today. Since 1995, more than 137,000 preK-12 children have had a CDF Freedom Schools experience and more than 16,000 college students and young adult staff have been trained by CDF to deliver this empowering model." In partnership with local congregations, schools, colleges and universities, community organizations, and secure juvenile justice facilities the CDF Freedom Schools program boosts student motivation to read, generates more positive attitudes toward learning, increases self-esteem and connects the needs of children and families to the resources of their communities. - See more at: http://www.childrensdefense.org/programs/freedomschools)

More than a year ago, Appleton Episcopal Ministries and the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta initiated efforts to bring a Freedom School™ to Macon, Georgia. Freedom School™ is a curriculum created by the Children’s Defense Fund to serve children who face poverty and who lack access to educational resources they need to succeed. Housed at Appleton’s headquarters at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, this site is serving 50 Bibb County scholars, all rising 1-3 graders, mainly from Ingram-Pye, Southfield, and Riley elementary schools. The program is offered free of charge to these scholars and is financially supported by Appleton Episcopal Ministries. If you would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to help sustain Freedom School Macon, please contact Missioner Julie Groce at 478-731-5901, email her at missioner@ appletonepiscopal.org, or mail your contribution made payable to Appleton to 753 College Street, Macon, GA 31201.
