About Fat Marmot Week

The largest of the true hibernators, marmots bulk up all summer to survive the winter. Fat Marmot Week is an opportunity to get folks excited about yellow-bellied marmots, one of our favorite alpine residents, and to share the science behind their weight gain. The Marmot Project at Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL) is hosting the event, and we'll share insights into the marmots we study while we root for them to get fat!

About the Marmot project

The Marmot Project at the RMBL is a long-term research project following marked individuals from birth to death. It started in 1962 and is the world's second longest-running study of individually marked mammals. The project aims to understand how marmot behave, communicate, live socially, adjsut and adapt to the changes in the environment. About RMBL

The Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL) is an independent nonprofit organization founded in 1928. Located at 9,500 feet above sea level in Gothic, Colorado, the field station maintains one of the most extensive collections of long-term ecological data in the world. Each year, it engages more than 750 K–12 students and 40 undergraduates through its programs and supports more than 190 professional scientists and 60 graduate students. Learn more at rmbl.org.
