RUMKHORRF'S INDUCTION COIL




INTRODUCTION

An induction coil is used to produce a very high voltage from a source of very low voltage . It consists a primary coil wound over a soft iron core and a secondary coil wound coaxially over the primary coil.The secondary coil is connected with two rods. The primary circuit contains a battery and a circuit interrupter. Interrupter is made as follows One end of primary coil is connected with soft iron hammer and capacitor and other end with a battery. Hammer just touches the screw and is close to the core.The screw is connected with other terminal of battery. As shown in figure.

1. MAKE

& BREAK

When screw touches the strip the primary circuit is completed & a current is established in the primary circuit. Because of the current in the primary coil, the soft iron core become magnetized. It attracts the iron hammer & contact between the screw and the strip is broken. The current stops in the primary circuit, the iron core demagnetized & the strip acquires its natural position. The screw again touches the strip & the current is established. This process of successive 'makes and break' continues.

2. GROWTH & DECAY OF CURRENT

When contact between the screw & the strip is made, the current grows in the primary circuit. Because of the self inductance of the primary coil, the growth will be slow. When the contact is broken, the current suddenly decrease to zero. The rate of decay of decay of current when the circuit is broken is quite high as compared to the rate of growth of current when the circuit is closed.

3. INDUCED EMF IN THE SECONDARY

as The current i in the primary changes, The magnetic flux linked with the secondary also changes. This induces an emf across the ends of secondary coil. This emf appears between the rods. When the circuit breaks, mod of di/dt is very large and hence the emf induced in the secondary is also very large with suitable arrangement

One can produce emf of the order of 50000 volts starting from a 12 volt battery.

NOTE ;- We does not require very high emf hence we reduce its size & make it too small.

CONNECT FULL WAVE BRIDGE RECTIFIER (CHARGER) WITH IT

After connecting a charger we get arrangement as shown in above figure.
