Provide your K-3 students with opportunities to critique books, form and voice opinions, participate in author and illustrator studies, and collaborate with classes throughout the state.
The Charter Oak Children's Book Award incorporates the Whole Book Approach to transform reading nominated titles into an interactive, dialogue-driven experience. Rather than listening passively to the story text, children act as active literary critics by examining physical design elements such as endpapers, typography, cover art, and page layout. By connecting these visual and structural details to the narrative, students deepen their visual literacy and evaluate each nominee holistically before casting their votes.
