1. A person who knows how to love and be loved.
사랑할 줄 알고, 사랑받는 줄 아는 사람.

Have you ever been loved by someone else? The affection between family members, the friendship among friends, and the love between partners are all essentially the same. Sometimes, to love and to be loved, you have to sacrifice yourself and open your heart to others. I hope that people who are willing to offer their support and presence to others will join this lab. Science is not something you do alone. Teamwork is important.
타인으로부터 사랑을 받아 본적 있나요? 가족간의 애정, 친구들과의 우정, 이성간의 사랑 모두 매한가지 입니다. 때로는 자신을 희생해서 마음을 내주어야 사랑할 수 있고, 또 그래야 사랑 받을 수 있습니다. 다른 사람에게 곁을 내어주는 사람이 이 연구실에 왔으면 좋겠습니다. 과학은 혼자하는 것이 아니니까요. 팀웍이 중요합니다. 

2. Mature person
성숙한 사람

Maturity is the ability to think, speak, and act your feelings within the bounds of dignity. – Samuel Ullman
Maturity is achieved when a person postpones immediate pleasures for long-term values. – Joshua L. Liebman
I was not a mature person. There were times when I reacted emotionally and rebelled against my advisor, and I spent my twenties feeling unstable. As I gradually realized that not everything in life goes my way—as I grew up—I have been striving to become a more mature person.
A truly beautiful person is someone who, no matter what emotions they feel or how much they want to express them, knows how to hold back a little out of consideration for others. Even if we are close and interact without formality, those who understand that each moment given to us is not eternal naturally carry dignity in their words and gestures.
Someone who is considerate of others is a person who can look beyond their own fleeting emotions and see further into the future.

저는 성숙하지 못한 사람이었습니다. 지도교수님께 감정적으로 반항하기도 하고, 불안정한 이십대를 보냈었습니다. 인생에서 내 마음대로 되는 것이 많지 않다는걸 점점 깨달아가면서 (철이 들면서), 성숙한 사람이 되고자 노력하고 있습니다. 어떤 감정이 들어도, 그리고 그걸 표현하고 싶어도, 다른 사람들을 배려해서 살짝 유보할 줄 아는 미덕이 있는 사람은 아름다운 사람입니다. 아무리 격의 없이 지내고 친근감있게 한다고 하더라도, 우리에게 주어진 순간 순간이 영원하지 않다는 것을 아는 사람은 말투, 몸짓 하나 하나 품위가 있기 마련입니다. 다른 사람을 배려하는 사람은 지금의 순간적인 감정보다 더 멀리 내다볼 줄 아는 사람입니다.

3. A person who admits to mistakes (own up, confess, self-aware, open-minded)
실수를 인정하는 사람(자신의 잘못을 시인하고, 고백하며, 자기 인식이 있고, 열린 마음을 가진 사람)
Sometimes, when working on something, we follow our intuition. If things go wrong or our intuition conflicts with other interests, it can feel as if the very essence of our intuition is being denied, creating a sense of crisis. In such moments, people often make excuses, avoid responsibility, or refuse to admit their mistakes.
However, everyone makes mistakes. No one is perfect. I want to work with people who honestly acknowledge their shortcomings. When you admit your weaknesses, that’s where growth begins. If you don’t acknowledge them, you can’t fix them. Even if others point out your weaknesses, it’s a comment on your shortcomings, not a denial of your existence.
A person with a healthy sense of self can rise above their weaknesses. They can become more mature and continue to grow.
어떤 일을 하다보면, 직감을 따라갈 때가 있고 그것이 잘못되거나 다른 이해관계와 상충될 때 마치 내 직감 혼은 존재감이 부정당하는 것 같은 위기의식이 들기도 합니다. 그럴 때 사람들은 변명을 하거나, 회피하거나, 실수를 인정하지 않고 우기기도 합니다. 하지만, 사람은 누구나 실수를 합니다. 완벽할 수 없습니다. 저는 정직하게 자신의 부족한 부분을 인정하는 사람과 함께하고 싶습니다. 인정하면, 그 부분부터 자라날 수 있습니다. 인정하지 않으면, 고칠 수 가 없습니다. 다른 사람이 나의 약점에 대해 지적해도, 그것은 약점에 대한 지적이지 존재의 부정은 아닙니다. 자아가 건강한 사람은 약점을 딛고 일어설 수 있습니다. 더 성숙해지고 자라날 수 있습니다. 

4. A person who faces the current situation and reports quickly
현재 상황을 직시하고 신속하게 보고하는 사람
The moment you discover a mistake you have made, you should report it to me and discuss how we will address it together. If you refuse to acknowledge your own errors, you will only end up taking a much longer and more difficult path. It is important to face reality directly and develop strategies for how to navigate each situation as it arises.
Completing a degree does not make you a master of all research topics; in fact, you are likely to gain deep knowledge in only a very small area—something as tiny as the dirt under a fly’s toenail. During your degree, as you form hypotheses and conduct experiments, you will find that, just like in life, things rarely go exactly as planned. Each time you encounter difficulties, thinking through and figuring out how to overcome them is what research is all about.
Once you finish your degree, it is like earning a badge of honor. You will have the ability to propose various solutions and apply appropriate methodologies to whatever challenges life throws at you. Ultimately, the purpose of your degree is to learn how to conduct research.
위의 내용과 관련하여서, 자신이 잘못한 것을 발견한 직시, 저에게 보고하고 어떻게 대응해 나갈지를 논의해야합니다. 자신의 실수를 인정하지 않고 부정하면 그만큼 더 먼 길을 돌아가야합니다. 현실을 직시하고, 그때 그때 어떻게 해체나가야하는지에 대한 전략을 세워야합니다. 학위과정을 마친다고 해서 모든 연구내용을 섭렵하는 척척박사가 될 순 없습니다. 파리 발톱의 때 만큼 아주 작은 영역에 대해서만 지식을 취득할 가능성이 높습니다. 하지만, 학위과정 동안 가설을 세우고, 이에 맞추어 실험을 하다보면 인생처럼 마음대로 되는 것이 잘 없습니다. 그 때마다 어떻게 해체나갈지 궁리하고 고민하는 것이 바로 연구입니다. 그리고 나서 학위를 마치고나면, 훈장이 부여됩니다. 인생에서 어떤 어려움이 닥쳐도 해결할 수 있는 여러 가능성을 제시해보고 적절한 방법론을 기용할 수 있습니다. 결국 학위 기간동안 연구하는 법을 배우는 것입니다.

5. A person who actively deals with his/her work with a sense of ownership
자신의 업무에 대해 주인의식을 가지고 적극적으로 임하는 사람
The main agent of a degree program must be the student themselves. If your advisor tells you to do something unreasonable, should you simply pretend to obey? Instead, you should question why such things are necessary and prove that you can earn your degree without blindly following orders. Rather than becoming someone who mindlessly repeats assigned tasks like a parrot, you must learn to think and make judgments independently.
Just as the saying “the student surpasses the teacher” goes, you should ultimately be able to teach your advisor, pioneer new fields, and establish your own academic identity and style. The advisor’s role is to offer guidance as someone who has already experienced the degree process and as a senior in life. However, since all research must break new ground rather than simply repeat the past, every project is new even for the advisor. This means that the advisor’s hypotheses and methods are not always correct. You must always think critically and, if your advisor is wrong, be able to explain why and persuade them.
After graduation, you will leave the greenhouse and face the storms of the real world. I hope you will become a great zelkova tree, standing strong through those storms and providing shelter and shade for others.
학위 과정의 주체는 학위 하는 본인이 되어야합니다. 지도교수가 죽으라고 하면, 죽는 시늉이라도 해야할까요? 왜 그래야만 하는지 따지고, 그렇게 하지 않아도 학위 받을 수 있음을 증명해야합니다. 시키는 일을 앵무새처럼 반복하는 사람이 될 것이 아니라, 주체적으로 사고하고 판단할 줄 알아야합니다. 청출어람이라는 말처럼 종국에는 지도교수를 가르칠 줄 알아야 새로운 분야를 개척해서 자신만의 학위, 학풍을 만들었다고 할 수 있을 것입니다. 지도교수는 먼저 학위 과정을 경험한 사람으로서, 그리고 인생의 선배로서, 조언을 해주는 역할이며 어떤 연구든 과거를 답습할 수 없기 때문에 늘 새로운 연구여야만 하기 때문에 지도교수도 처음인 연구입니다. 따라서 지도교수의 가설과 방법론이 항상 먹히는 것이 아닙니다. 언제든 비판적으로 사고 하고, 지도교수가 틀리면 틀린 이유를 제시해서 설득할 줄 알아야합니다. 졸업하고 나면 온실을 벗어나 세상의 광풍을 맞이하기 때문입니다. 그 광풍에도 꿋꿋히 살아남아, 또 다른 사람들에게 쉴만한 그늘을 제공하는 커다란 느티나무가 되어줬으면 좋겠습니다.
