Approach to Providing Unbundled Legal Services:
I have been promoting and providing unbundled legal services for 15 years. It is helpful to clients because they are more knowledgeable of the processes than most and are in control of their file. The underlying basis of my approach is education for the client. My approach begins with educating the client on the process and legal requirements, then providing a transparent fee structure for assistance, coaching where possible and stepping in when necessary.
Mediation: I have family mediation training and I have acted as counsel in 16-20 mediations in the last 5 years.
Approach to Supporting Clients in Mediation:
In providing unbundled services, I like to first advise and coach a client usually twice prior to mediation. First that advice usually includes a check list of disclosure that they must have from the other party or provide to the other party before mediation. Then on a second meeting, we discuss the disclosure and come to an understanding of what an agreeable outcome would be. Then I assist and coach with a procedural plan for negotiation within the framework of mediation to achieve that outcome. If a client feels after one or two meetings prior to a mediation that they may not be able to keep to the procedural plan, only then would we discuss any requirements for me to attend with the client. If the client is going into mediation without my attendance, I advise them not to sign off on any agreement until they have been given the opportunity for further legal advice on the final agreement before signing.
Cultural Diversity Experience:
I have worked with many different cultures, including First Nations, Middle Eastern, West African, and a variety of European families, all with unique and sometimes subtle but important cultural differences.
