Approach to Providing Unbundled Legal Services:
My approach involves a free initial consult for up to one hour to determine suitability and if the services sought are something I can provide assistance with. Fee arrangement is also discussed including retainer fee, anticipated costs, flat fee vs hourly rate and reduced rates or a sliding scale depending on the financial situation of the party or parties. I provide unbundled legal services including: general legal advice on family matters, drafting separation agreements, Independent Legal Advice (ILA) on agreements, preparation of cohabitation agreements, drafting of pleadings including Notice of Family Claim and Counter-claim, drafting and filing of desk order divorce applications, and preparation of Motions and Affidavits for applications in chambers including support orders, retroactive support, orders around parenting arrangements, court order sale of family home. I also provide mediation services to unrepresented clients at a reduced rate which can include revision or drafting of a separation agreement post-mediation or preparation of addendum agreements.
Mediation:
I have family mediation training and practice family mediation. I have acted as counsel in 21-30 mediations in the last five years. I have conducted 21-30 mediations as mediator in the last five years.
Approach to Supporting Clients in Mediation:
I will act as counsel to clients at mediation on a limited retainer including review of material and appearance at mediation to assist in negotiating or in the "background" to provide advice to the client on the process/negotiating at mediation. As part of this I can also provide ILA (Independent Legal Advice) on any agreement reached.
As an accredited family law mediator I provide unbundled mediation services to clients both those with counsel and unrepresented. I assist in mediating narrow aspects of a matter such as parenting arrangements, child support, sections 7 expenses, or spousal support and if necessary can provide addendum agreements to Separation Agreements already in place. I can also mediate property and debt matters as between individuals and draft and agreement around same. I offer mediation services at a reduced rate to those clients who do not have a lawyer. The fee can be hourly or negotiated as a flat rate depending upon the matter at issue.

Cultural Diversity Experience:
I have been a practicing lawyer in the Lower Mainland for over 29 years and in that time have gained much experience with clients of differing backgrounds, cultures and experiences. As such, I have become aware of the unique needs of clients whose socio-economic status or cultural norms and values are not aligned with those of our legal system in BC or those who have experienced racial injustice in our courts. In family law, in particular, I believe it is important to listen carefully, with respect ,to understand the perspective and experience of every client who comes for guidance. I avoid making assumptions or stereotypes and adapt my communication style to suit each client whether that requires a more informal approach, an in person meeting to assist with communication or a mediation conducted with break out rooms to reduce conflict and trauma. I am a trained collaborative lawyer and have taken courses in client-centered interviewing wherein I have developed skills around expressing empathy, affirmation, & supporting autonomy with the aim of building trust and rapport. I also have training in integrative negotiation. I have experience advocating for and assisting clients of various ethnicities, with disabilities, in same sex marriages, and of advanced age. I always endeavor to create an environment to allow each client to feel heard, safe and supported.
