Approach to Providing Unbundled Legal Services:
I believe the unbundling of legal services is an important way to provide access to quality legal assistance in the areas that people really need it.
Mediation: I do not have family mediation training. I have acted as counsel in 11-15 mediations in the last 5 years. I do not act as mediator.
Approach to Supporting Clients in Mediation:
In mediation, preparation is key. You need to have mapped out what you want, what you believe the other side wants, and what both of you are likely to get if you end up in Court based on an assessment of the evidence. You need to know what you are willing to compromise on and what you are not. From there, you can strategize what to offer the other side and when.
You also need to prepare for the emotional side mediation, whether it's your emotions, your ex-spouse's emotions, or both.
Keeping as clear a mind as possible while executing a comprehensive plan is the best way to get the settle you want at mediation.
Cultural Diversity Experience:
I serve clients from many cultural backgrounds and traditions from around the world.
The key to assisting any client, but particularly clients who are unfamiliar with the Canadian justice system, is to take the time to ensure we both understand each other. I need to make sure I understand the client and his or her specific family circumstances; and I need to make sure the client understands the law and how it applies to those circumstances.
In both cases, it is all about listening, asking questions, and then listening some more.
