Thanks for making it out today to my virtual book signing! I write science fiction novels and puzzle books.
Today I’m featuring my stand-alone novel, Quality DNA, and my current series, In the Lurch, along with my logic puzzle series, Puzzling Escapes.
Quality DNA is personally my favorite novel. It’s set in a future world where everyone’s DNA is cataloged in a global database. In the series In the Lurch, robots have taken all the jobs, so those who own robots are incredibly wealthy, and the rest of humanity is not. I’m currently working on book three in the series.
He will do anything to make the perfect human. She will do anything to uncover the truth.
In 2059, every person’s DNA is recorded in the Genome Database. Even though Annette’s perfect baby girl was the product of a one night stand, she knows the database will give her the name of the sexy stranger who fathered her child. Instead, her baby’s DNA matches that of a man she’s never met who died several years ago.
Irene works at the Social Department and is assigned Annette’s case. When more and more instances of births that don’t make sense and babies who shouldn’t exist cross her desk, she realizes there’s something deeper going on. Her investigation sucks her into a sinister organization with a single goal in mind.
Misguided matchmaking. Deranged medical experiments. Outright terrorism. All in the name of finding one elusive thing: Quality DNA.
YOU'VE BEEN REPLACED.
Once a machine could do as much work as three men, the labor force was quickly replaced by much more efficient androids. As the number of robots grew, jobs disappeared, and everyone in the middle class found themselves obsolete. The wealthiest few prosper, but most of humanity was thrown into extreme poverty.
Leona lives a life of privilege, while Roemell never knows where his next meal will come from. A terrorist group—the lurch—starts targeting wealthy estates, burning them to the ground. Leona and Roemell find themselves thrown together, both having lost everything dear to them. Will they be able to stop the terrorists, or will all of humanity get left in the lurch?
YOU’VE BEEN HACKED.
Roemell and Leona thought they were finished with the terrorist called the Lurch… until all the video evidence against them gets corrupted. Unless Leona and Roemell can come up with more evidence, the assassin who burned down Leona’s home and murdered her father will go free. Leona refuses to let that happen, so she and Roemell decide to travel to the capital and testify in order for justice to be served.
What was supposed to be a quick flight across the country becomes a perilous journey. After their robot gets hacked, an airplane crashes, and the pair are abducted, they suspect it’s something more than simple bad luck. There are larger forces at work trying to stop them at any cost.
Immediately following the events of In the Lurch, In the Midst is the second installment of this exciting cyberpunk series.
A lot of people who’ve read them say these books feel like a cross between an escape room and a choose-you-own-adventure novel.
Each book is completely self-contained; you don’t need an app or website to check your answers. Since a lot of the puzzles are pretty hard, hints and solutions are built into the books and are written as part of the narrative.
The language is family-friendly, so I recommend these books for adults and kids in middle school and up.
Inspired by escape rooms, Puzzling Escapes locks the reader in a rich and fascinating scenario full of riddles and clues. Grab a pencil and a group of friends—or jump in alone—and try to escape. Solve the wide variety of puzzles in any order, all in one go or in several sittings. If you get stuck, you can ask your companion David for a hint or even have him solve the puzzle for you. Everything is contained in this book, so there’s no need for a special app or internet connection.
The crew on the Oort 7200 Spaceship mysteriously disappeared over a decade ago. Since then, brave travelers have navigated to the abandoned ship, but none have ever returned. Despite the rumors surrounding the Oort 7200, you and your friend Astrid decide it would be fun to investigate the ship. But as soon as you're inside, the doors lock and the power fails. Can you find all the clues and solve each puzzle, or will you succumb to the same fate as the other adventure seekers who dared enter the Oort 7200?
In the historic part of town sits a quaint little bookstore, Athena Booksellers. You and your friend David decide to go inside when you get caught in a sudden downpour. However, only a few minutes later, everyone has left and the doors are locked. With no way of contacting anyone outside, you must solve the puzzles scattered around the bookstore in order to escape.
My Bio:
Beth Martin is a science fiction author. She has her degree in mathematics, enjoys all things numbers, and is always up for a board game. Other hobbies include playing the piano and making quilts. Although she's terrible at video games, she loves watching her husband play.
Most of her time is spent chasing her two adorable children. She also has two fluffy cats.
Who are you published with?
I am self-published, which means I do absolutely everything myself! Well, not everything. I do have an editor. I'm proud to be an indie author which is why I named my publishing imprint Beth Martin Books.
Who does your cover designs?
I actually do them myself! I rely heavily on stock photography and combine images, tweak colors, and adjust the lighting. And, of course, I also add all the text.
I’m a writer too! What’s your biggest piece of advice for a new writer?
Keep writing. Sit down, day after day, and put words on a page. Writing a novel can take a long time, and dedication and discipline are the main qualities that will get you to the end.
I love connecting with other writers, so feel free to shoot me an email! If you have a web presence, I’d love to follow you.
What inspires you?
Everything! I draw inspiration from books, movies, TV, video games, and many other forms of storytelling. Usually, I start with something small, and my imagination takes over the rest. For instance, one day I thought, I’m a sci-fi writer. I should really write a book about robots. I thought about what future robots might be like and what their role in society would be. How would these sophisticated tools influence customs and the economy? Once I had the world and characters figured out, I wrote In the Lurch.
How long have you been writing? When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
I started writing about five years ago. I had an idea for a story and decided to write it down as a book. After that, I was hooked and kept writing and writing. I didn’t think about writing as a career until I had already written four novels.
How long does it take you to write a book?
Typically the first draft takes me anywhere from six weeks to six months. After that, there are edits, making a cover, formatting, etc. before the book launches. Typically, it takes anywhere from six months to eighteen months to get from idea to published book. And I usually have a few projects going at any given time.
Do you write full time?
That’s my goal! Currently, my full-time gig is Mom. Once my youngest is in Kindergarten, I’ll have more time to dedicate to writing and publishing.
