In 2014, my barn rescued two little Quarter Horses named Grace and Sally. They were both quiet, shy, and fearful of everything around them. I instantly became attached and wanted to do everything I could to make their worlds better. With my trainers guidance, I started working with the horses and was eventually allowed to ride them. Simple rides slowly turned into training rides and a bond was formed.
I found myself spending all my spare time at the barn working with Grace. She earned her loving nickname, Goober, during this time and became my heart horse. She relearned how to simply be a horse and enjoy the benefits of being loved and spoiled by a young girl. She learned how to walk, trot, and canter under saddle, as well as beginning to jump. At the same time, she showed me that this is the only thing I want to do for the rest of my life.
In 2015, Grace started to have some health complications from the difficult situation she came out of. I was able to work with her less, but still spent every moment possible with her giving her the love she missed over the past few years. In September of that year, she sadly had to be euthanized due to extenuating circumstances from her health issues.
With all the courage that Grace showed and all of the strength and love she gave, I wanted her to live on. She is the inspiration for my program and I have built it around the traits she so willingly shared. I strongly believe everyone should have the opportunity to love and be given grace by a special horse.Â
