About
The Gender and Name Change Project (“GNCP”) is a volunteer legal clinic run by UC Davis law students and supervising attorneys who provide legal information to California residents seeking to change their name and gender markers on their identification documents.
GNCP recognizes the distinct barriers trans, nonbinary, gender non-conforming, and intersex people face in their everyday lives, and the myriad ways in which society overlooks our communities’ needs and personal livelihoods. To combat the systemic transphobia apparent in each interaction that requires identification, and to increase access to critical legal services, GNCP seeks to positively impact our clients’ quality of life and personal safety by helping them complete a legal name and gender change that aligns with their lived identity. GNCP believes in the power of collective action, community support, trans joy, and using our privilege as law students to provide the highest quality of care to those most marginalized within our community.
Our Work
GNCP pairs each client with a law student counselor who works with them to complete court forms. We also provide general guidance on the next steps for the name and gender change process, from receiving your court order to changing your identification documents.
We are equipped to help with both adult and minor name and gender changes.
We provide up to date information on how changing laws affect trans, nonbinary, gender non-conforming, and intersex people, including legislation, executive orders, and administrative policies.
Additional projects coming soon!
Currently, we are only able to provide services during the school year (August to December, January to May).
The Scope of Our Clinic and Our Limits
GNCP is a student-run organization of volunteers. GNCP is NOT a law firm or legal services provider. We cannot provide legal services, meaning we CANNOT provide advice, make decisions for you, or represent you in court or otherwise. All we can do is provide you with relevant legal information so you can make an informed decision for yourself.Members of the clinic that you will have direct contact with (student counselors, lead student counselors, vice co-directors, and co-directors) are NOT licensed to practice law. We are simply sharing our knowledge of the process. The information provided on this site and any other information we provide should NOT be considered legal advice. Engaging with our services does NOT establish an attorney-client relationship. Members of the Gender and Name Change Project are NOT your attorney. If you need further legal guidance, we are happy to discuss your options. Any decision that needs to be made in your case must be made by you or your attorney, NOT GNCP.
