Calvin’s ingenious pitching machines relieves exhausted Knight hurlers From the Chimes Archives April 21, 1972
The operation of the machine is based on two rotating tires powered by a motor. A baseball placed between the two wheels is shot out toward the batter by the wheels’ rapid motion. The real value of the machine lies in its versatility. By slowing down one of the tires, an overspin is placed on the ball, causing it to curve. A batter having trouble hitting a curve ball can receive a steady diet of curves from the machine and attempt to straighten out his problems. Also, the machine can be tilted in such a way to shoot high pop-ups and fly balls or sharp ground balls. Area coaches have reacted very favorably to demonstrations of Calvin’s most reliable “arm.” Its pitch is considered an accurate simulation of a human’s pitch. Calvin players have also given their approval to the machine. Betten said he has applied for a patent on certain features of his device. He should have the results in about six months. Betten feels the major drawback to further construction is the supply of non-marking tires, so essential to the operation. Right now his is uncertain of a source for such tires. Betten believes the appeal of the machine centers around its rugged, heavy structure which still maintains accuracy and versatility. Baseball coach Marvin Zuidema is very pleased with the pitching machine. He states that its accuracy and fast operating speed allow for the accomplishment of a great deal in a short period of time. It lacks, of course, the psychological dimension of a human pitching, but is a great aid to indoor batting practice. Zuidema was particularly grateful for the machine this year as his team was often restricted to field house practice due to the inclement weather. The “skill” of Betten’s contraption is even more apparent as Calvin’s human pitchers continue to flounder. Calvin pitchers were particularly unimpressive in the opener of the Albion double-header, and one fan was over heard saying, “put in the pitching machine.” © 2002-2003 Calvin College Chimes - All Rights Reserved - chimes@calvin.edu. |
